RED = Qualified For Round of Last 16
3 MAY 2001
DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 3 : Montecinos 60, Ibáñez 77, Bautista 91
JORGE WILSTERMANN 0
In true dramatic fashion, Deportes Concepción qualified for the next stage.
They dominated Jorge Wilstermann throughout the whole match, but it took
them one hour to open the scoring, through Montecinos. In the 77th minute,
they added a second, but the draw in the other match of the group, between
San Lorenzo and Nacional, meant that they needed a third goal in order to go
through. And the decisive goal was scored in injury time, in a header by
Bautista.
SAN LORENZO 1 : Meneses 67 (og)
NACIONAL 1 : Islas 36
In order to qualify, San Lorenzo needed a victory at home against Nacional.
But the Argentineans didn't play well, and a draw was more than they
deserved.

DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 3 : Montecinos 18, Torres 23, Verdugo 86
SAN LORENZO 2 : Abreu 44, Estevez 90
San Lorenzo wanted victory to clinch their berth in the next stage, so they
did all the attacking in the early stages. But in the 18th minute, Deportes
Concepción caught them off-guard and Montecinos headed home a cross by
Donoso to open the scoring. That goal improved the morale of the home
team, which scored again five minutes later, in a penalty kick converted by
Torres. But San Lorenzo didn't give up, and managed to pull one back just
before half time, with a header by Abreu. The Argentinean side kept the
pressure on in the second half, but the heavy rain somewhat restrained their
efforts. Four minutes from time, Deportes Concepción clinched victory.
Montecinos created a fast counter-attack and passed the ball to Verdugo,
who dribbled the keeper and scored. In injury time, Estevez scored San
Lorenzo's second goal. Right after that, there was a major altercation,
which ended up with Abreu punching a police officer. As a result, the
Argentinean player almost was arrested.

JORGE WILSTERMANN 1 : Cárdenas 68
NACIONAL 2 : Gutiérrez 26, Sosa 90
Even playing without five of their regular starters (called up for the
Uruguayan national team), Nacional managed to beat Jorge Wilstermann,
and ensured first place in group 3. Nacional simply has a better team than
the Bolivians, and they made that count. Gutiérrez opened the scoring in the
26th minute, and Jorge Wilstermann didn't come even close of scoring in the
first half. Helped by the dizzy heights of La Paz, the home side dominated
the second half. In the 68th minute, Cárdenas tied the match, heading home
after a corner kick. The match seemed destined to end in a draw, but in the
last minute Sosa received a pass inside the box and shot a rocket past the
goalkeeper.
11 APRIL 2001
NACIONAL 2 : Coelho 37, 51
DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 0
Deportes Concepción was looking for a miracle that never materialized. The
early minutes were wide open, with both teams looking for goals, but wasting
too many chances. The difference in this match was Fabián Coelho. Before
scoring his first goal, the attacker twice hit Concepción's post. The
opening goal came in the 37th minute. The Chilean defenders were not able
to clear a corner kick and the ball ended up with Coelho, who rifled a rocket
shot, which deflected on a defender before going in. Six minutes after the
break, Coelho struck again, deflecting home a cross by Morales. Concepción
tried to attack, but Nacional kept its cool and held on to the result.
3 APRIL 2001
SAN LORENZO 2 : Quinteros 42, Abreu 65
JORGE WILSTERMANN 0
San Lorenzo got revenge against Jorge Wilstermann. The Argentinean side is
much better, and they made that count in this match.
13 MARCH 2001
NACIONAL 1 : Martínez 34
SAN LORENZO 0
From the start, Nacional showed more interest in the match, pressing forward
most of the time. On the other hand, San Lorenzo dealt very well with the
Uruguayan attacks, and seemed capable of holding on to the result. Justice
was made in the 34th minute, after Varela was brought down inside San
Lorenzo's box. Up stepped Sergio Martínez and put the home side ahead.
Naturally, the Argentinean side had no option but to attack, but it was the
home side that created the best scoring chances in the second half.
8 MARCH 2001
JORGE WILSTERMANN 2 : Jara 65, Ponce 82
DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 1 : Paulista 77
The first half was boring. Jorge Wilstermann created a couple of early
chances and that was all. As usual in this competition, the match only
ignited after the first goal was scored, and that happened in the 65th
minute. After a cross, Jara rose all alone in the Concepción box, and headed
the ball into the net. Trailing by one goal, the Chilean side finally woke
cup, and went to the attack. They tied the match in the 75th minute, when
Marcos Paulista received a cross from the right side and scored with a
potent shot. Now it was time for the home side to press forward, and they
were rewarded in the 82nd minute, when Ponce scored from a free kick,
surprising goalkeeper Navarro Montoya.
1 MARCH 2001
SAN LORENZO 2 : Rodríguez 18, Abreu 30
DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 1 : Ibáñez 42
San Lorenzo took advantage of a strong start to take its first three points
in the Libertadores Cup. Goalkeeper Navarro Montoya was able to keep the
Argentinean side at bay for the first 18 minutes, but then Rodríguez opened
the scoring for the home side. At the half-hour mark, Abreu made it 2x0. But
then San Lorenzo committed the cardinal sin of laying back and Deportes
Concepción took control of the match, with Ibáñez cutting their deficit by
half in the 42nd minute. In the second half, the Chilean side maintained its
dominance, but San Lorenzo was well set up in defence, and did not allow
space for the visitors.
20 FEBRUARY 2001
DEPORTES CONCEPCIÓN 0
NACIONAL 0
Concepción dominated the match but couldn't break Nacional's defence. The
home side got a goal in the second half, but referee Robert Troxler
disallowed it, claiming that Ibáñez deflected the ball into the net with his
hand. The TV replays showed that the referee was wrong.
15 FEBRUARY 2001
NACIONAL 3 : Oscar Martínez 20, 63, Morales 82
JORGE WILSTERMANN 0
Jorge Wilstermann's hopes were riding high before this match thanks to their
victory over San Lorenzo last week. But the Bolivian side suffered a blow
from Nacional, who deservedly took all three points. Morales received a
cross but couldn't connect properly, but the ball ended up with Martínez,
who opened the scoring. After allowing the goal, Jorge Wilstermann lost
control of themselves and they were lucky to head into the break just one
goal down. In the 63rd minute, Nacional sealed the match thanks to another
goal by Martínez. Coelho made a nice play and passed to Morales, who entered
the box and coolly touched the ball past the goalkeeper. With eight minutes
to go, Nacional added a third goal, from the penalty spot.
Red Cards : Loayza (Jorge Wilstermann), Vanzini (Nacional)
7 FEBRUARY 2001
JORGE WILSTERMANN 4 : Sozzani 4, Cárdenas 49, Soria 52, Galindo 58
SAN LORENZO 2 : Romagnoli 60, Portocarrero 69
The home side started at full speed, and wasted no time to score. In a free
kick, Guiberguis crossed the ball to Sozzani, who surprised the defenders
and scored. Jorge Wilstermann dominated the entire first half, but wasn't
able to extend their lead. After the break, the Bolivian side swiftly killed
the match. First, Galindo made a nice play, but Saja saved his shot. On the
rebound, Cárdenas scored. Two minutes later, Paredes handled inside San
Lorenzo's box and goalkeeper Soria scored from the penalty spot. And
finally, Galindo made it 4x0 for the home side, poking home after a scramble
in the box. After 60 minutes of play, San Lorenzo finally woke up. Romagnoli
scored a goal for the Argentinean side, taking advantage of a mistake by the
opposing goalkeeper. In the 69th minute, Romagnoli crossed to Portocarrero,
who headed home to make it 4x2. But it was too late for a comeback, and
Tuzzio's sending off in the 71st minute ended any hopes of a miracle by San
Lorenzo.
Red Card : Tuzzio (San Lorenzo)
Attendance : around 30,000
