JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

13 SEPTEMBER 2000

VASCO 4 : Romário 28, 62, Juninho Carioca 30, Juninho Paulista 73
FLUMINENSE 3 : Magno Alves 2, Agnaldo 12, 59

Fluminense started strong and scored twice inside de first quarter of hour. The
first goal came on a penalty kick converted by Magno Alves. The second one
came through Agnaldo, who entered with ease in Vasco's box before scoring.
In the 28th, Romário cut Vasco's deficit tapping home a cross by Juninho
'paulista' (the former Boro player; they call him that way because he was born
in the state of São Paulo). Two minutes later, Vasco tied the match tanks to a
perfect free kick by Juninho 'carioca'. After the break, Fluminense once again
took the lead. Magno Alves crossed from the right side, Odvan failed to clear,
and the ball fell to Agnaldo, who easily tapped it in. In the 62nd minute, Vasco
tied the match again, in a penalty kick converted by Romário. Just nine minutes
later, Vasco scored the game winner, taking advantage of a mistake by Flu's
defence. Juninho 'paulista' stole the ball from a defender, and with speed
entered Fluminense's box and shot with no chance for the goalkeeper.

PONTE PRETA 3 : Marco Aurélio 32, Washington 35, Macedo 85
SÃO PAULO FC 3 : Marcelo Ramos 66, Wilson 86, Gustavo Nery 88

This match had plenty of excitement. In the 32nd minute, Marco Aurélio
grabbed a deserved opener for Ponte Preta, with a powerful shot. Just a few
minutes later, Washington made it 2x0 heading home a cross while the São
Paulo FC defence was just standing still. The 'Tricolor' scored its first goal midway
through the second half, against the run of play. Sandro Hiroshi crossed from the
wing and Marcelo Ramos scored. With five minutes to go, Clodoaldo made a great
play and passed to Macedo, who scored, apparently ensuring all three points for
the home team. But São Paulo FC didn't give up, and Wilson made it 3x2 in the
ensuing play. With just two minutes to go, the Tricolor were awarded a free kick
close to Ponte Preta's box. Goalkeeper Rogério took it, but instead of shooting
directly to the goal, he crossed to Gustavo Nery, who headed home.

14 SEPTEMBER 2000

FLAMENGO 3 : Adriano 33, Bruno Carvalho 45, Denílson 85
GOIÁS 1 : Dill 5

Goiás started the match at full speed. The visiting team was awarded a penalty
kick after Evair was brought down inside Flamengo's box. Dill coolly converted
from the spot. Goiás then relaxed too much and started to play more defensibly,
and the home team took advantage of that. In the 33rd minute, Adriano received
a long ball on the edge of the box and scored with a powerful shot. In the last
minute of the first half, Flamengo took the lead with a header by Bruno Carvalho.
In the second half, Goiás attacked more, but Fla was always dangerous on the
counter-attacks. In one of those plays, the home team scored its third goal.

Red Cards : Túlio (Goiás), Bruno Carvalho (Flamengo)

16 SEPTEMBER 2000

INTERNACIONAL 1 : Dênis 49
SANTOS 1 : Edmundo 12

Internacional remains winless at its own stadium after this uninspiring draw
against Santos. The away team opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Dodô
and Edmundo made a nice passing play, with the 'Animal' completing to the
net. After the goal, Santos relaxed and Inter started to dominate. The home
team hit the post and were denied a clear penalty in the first half. Four
minutes after the break, justice was made when Dênis tied the match. The
player tried to cross; the ball deflected on a defender and fooled goalkeeper
Pitareli, who smashed his face against the post while trying to stop the shot.
After this play, the match became boring, and no more scoring chances were
created.

17 SEPTEMBER 2000

BAHIA 4 : Jean 17, Jajá 28, 45, 70
FLAMENGO 1 : Denílson 60

Jajá was the highlight on this unexpected rout by Bahia over Flamengo. The
home team dominated the match, and victory was completely deserved. Jean
opened the scoring on the 17th, heading home after a corner kick. On the
28th Jajá scored his first goal, and added a second in first half injury time.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, Denílson scored a consolation goal for
Flamengo, with a shot from the edge of the box. Ten minutes later, Jajá
completed his hat trick, with a beautiful play. He received a long ball through
the middle, dribbled past a defender, and dribbled twice goalkeeper Júlio César,
before scoring.

CORITIBA 1 : Alexandre
CORINTHIANS 1 : André

Corinthians completed one month without a victory (in any competition) after
this draw. Coritiba started the match better and deservedly opened the scoring
with Alexandre, who made a nice play inside the box before scoring. In the dying
minutes of the first half, André tied the match for the Timão. After the break,
Corinthians had a couple of scoring chances, but it wasCoritiba the dominant
team. Goalkeeper Maurício was the highlight, making a couple of good saves
that denied what would have been a deserved victory for the home team.

Red Card : João Carlos (Corinthians)

GRÊMIO 0
CRUZEIRO 0

Both teams left the pitch booed by the fans, and they deserved it. This was
a very boring match, since both teams were without their best players
(Ronaldinho Gaúcho and Geovanni), who were in the Brazilian Olympic squad.
Playing very defensibly, few scoring chances were created. The team that
came closest to scoring was Grêmio, which hit the post on a shot by Fábio
Baiano.

PALMEIRAS 1 : Arce 69
SPORT 1 : Érlon 40

Palmeiras remains winless at home after six matches. This time they couldn't
beat Sport, a team that is far from brilliant. This was a violent game, with 20
fouls being awarded in the opening 15 minutes. In the 40th minute, Adriano
shot a rocket from a free kick and goalkeeper Sérgio just managed to parry the
ball, which fell to Érlon, who easily scored for Sport. After the break, Palmeiras
dominated the match, but created few chances. The game-tying goal came on
a penalty kick converted by Arce.

SÃO PAULO FC 2 : França 11, Rogério 87
PORTUGUESA 0

São Paulo FC started the match better, creating some good scoring chances in
runs by Gustavo Nery. In one of those plays, they opened the scoring. Nery
came down the left side, dribbled two defenders and crossed to França, who
tucked it in. Portuguesa started to dominate the match in the 31st minute,
when Rogério Pinheiro was sent off for his second bookable offence. But when
the visiting team was closest to scoring, the referee awarded a dubious
penalty for São Paulo. Goalkeeper Rogério stepped up and converted from the
spot.

Red Cards : Rogério Pinheiro (São Paulo FC), Claudinho (Portuguesa)

GUARANI 0
GOIÁS 0

This match was very, very boring. It would be fair to expect an entertaining
encounter, since it featured the leader of the championship and the worst
team in the competition. Nevertheless, the match was dull. After all, Goiás
remains at the top spot on the table and Guarani has now completed 11
matches without a win.
