JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

9 AUGUST 2000

SANTOS 1 : Dodô 28
SÃO PAULO FC 1 : Fábio Simplício 52

This rematch of the São Paulo State championship was somewhat disappointing.
Edmundo made a quiet debut with the Santos jersey, creating just one scoring
chance. Goalkeeper Rogério also reached a milestone : this was his 300th
match for São Paulo FC.

Santos dominated the first half. It looked just natural when the home team
opened the scoring in the 28th minute through Dodô. After the break, São
Paulo improved, and created some chances. Santos still was the better side,
though. In the 52nd minute, the 'Tricolor' tied the match. After a low cross
in the box, defender Rubens Cardoso failed to control the ball, and Fábio
Simplício quickly took advantage of his mistake.

11 AUGUST 2000

VASCO 1 : Romário 63
CORINTHIANS 0

Coach Oswaldo Oliveira faced for the first time his former team and came
away as winner. Vasco was clearly the better side on this match, and should
have won by a more comfortable margin. The team from Rio de Janeiro
dominated the midfield with Juninho (former Boro player) and the other
Juninho, but Corinthians was able to hold on until the 63rd minute. Romário
and Viola made a nice passing play and the 'baixinho' ('shorty', Romário's
nickname in Brazil) scored. In the last minute, Corinthians had a good
chance to equalise, but Fernando Baiano missed it.

ATLÉTICO PARANAENSE 2 : Kléber 62, 87
ATLÉTICO MINEIRO 1 : André 60

Atlético Paranaense was the winner of the 'duel of the Atléticos'. The first
hour of match was dull. The game only improved after André opened the
scoring for the 'Galo'. But it took just two minutes for the home team to
tie the game, through Kléber. It seemed that the match would end up tied,
but Kléber found the net once again with just three minutes remaining.

12 AUGUST 2000

SÃO PAULO FC 3 : Fábio Simplício 21, Rogério Pinheiro 49, Sandro Hiroshi 87
FLAMENGO 2 : Adriano 15, 20

Flamengo started the match better and after 20 minutes they were leading
2x0, both goals scored by Adriano. But in the next minute the 'Tricolor'
started its comeback. Goalkeeper Clêmer failed to control a shot by Gustavo
and Fábio Simplício scored on the rebound. Four minutes after the break,
Rogério Pinheiro tied the match for São Paulo, taking advantage of another
mistake by Clêmer. And in the 87th minute, São Paulo completed its
remarkable comeback, with a delightful backheel goal by Sandro Hiroshi.

Red Card : Leonardo Inácio (Flamengo)

GRÊMIO 0
SANTOS 2 : Edmundo 61, Anderson 68

Edmundo scored his first goal for Santos in an otherwise dull encounter.
Grêmio was playing without their biggest star (Ronaldo Assis, who was with
the Brazilian Under-23 squad) and played this match with a defensive
approach, even playing at home. Santos also was more concerned about not
allowing goals than about scoring, so it's easy to figure out why this game
was boring.

Red Card : Astrada (Grêmio)

13 AUGUST 2000

GOIÁS 4 : Dill 9, Evair 45, Sílvio Criciúma 71, Araújo 82
VITÓRIA 5 : Alan Delon 10, 40, 69, Sinval 55, Claiton 72

Goiás was playing its fourth match in just eight days, and that took its
tool on the tournament leaders. Dill opened the scoring from the penalty
spot in the 9th minute, but Alan Delon tied the match just seconds later. He
once again scored in the 40th to put Vitória ahead. But in first half injury
time Evair tied the match for the home team. After the break, Vitória
increased the pressure and took again the lead in the 55th, when Alan Delon
missed a penalty kick, but Sinval scored on the rebound. And in the 69th
Alan Delon completed his hat trick, putting Vitória firmly in control.
Sílvio Criciúma scored two minutes later for Goiás, but the home fans' hopes
of a comeback lasted just one minute, until Claiton scored the Vitória's
fifth goal. In the 82nd, Araújo scored one more goal for Goiás, but it was
too late for another comeback.

Attendance : 19,369

ATLÉTICO PARANAENSE 0
PALMEIRAS 0

In typical Palmeiras stile, this was a truncated match, with many fouls and
few inspiring plays. The goalless draw was a good result for Palmeiras, but
failed to contempt Atlético, who missed the chance to come closer to table
leaders Goiás.

Red Card : Flávio (Palmeiras)

SPORT 1 : Sandro Gaúcho 79
CRUZEIRO 1 : Oséas 83

This was a very forgettable encounter. There were just four minutes of
entertaining football, starting on the 79th, when Sandro Gaúcho opened the
scoring until the 83rd, when Oséas scored the tying goal.

Red Card : Jackson (Cruzeiro)
Attendance : 19,123

CORINTHIANS 2 : Fernando 18, Ewerthon 54
SANTA CRUZ 0

Corinthians failed to impress, but on the other hand didn't find any
difficulties to beat Santa Cruz at an empty Morumbi stadium (less than 1,500
fans turned up for the game). The first goal came after a failed attempt by
the Santa Cruz defence to use the offside trap, leaving Fernando all alone
in front of the goalkeeper. The second goal came nine minutes after the
break, when Andrezinho made a nice play on the left side and crossed to
Ewerthon, who headed home.

BOTAFOGO CARIOCA 0
INTERNACIONAL 1 : Juca 86

The first half was dominated by Internacional, which had some good scoring
chances, but wasn't able to capitalise. After the break, Botafogo was the
better side, but also couldn't score on their chances. When it seemed that
the match would end up goalless, Juca scored the game-winning goal from a
free kick.
