JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

16 NOVEMBER 2000

GUARANI 3 : Marcinho 31, 58, Renato 76
SANTOS 2 : Dodô 34, Robert 70

Santos' millionaire squad needed a win to keep their hopes alive. Well, they
lost. On the other hand, hard-working Guarani lived to see another day, but
they'll need a draw against Palmeiras to qualify (see below). The match was
hotly contested. Santos came twice from behind, but in the 76th minute
Renato scored the game winner, completing a beautiful play by Fumagalli.

CORINTHIANS 1 : Fernando 31
FLAMENGO 4 : Petkovic 4, Alex 7, 27, Reinaldo 81

Flamengo got a superb victory, thanks to two goals inside the first ten
minutes. Too bad that this match was worth nothing, since both teams had
no more chances of getting into the playoffs. Fifteen minutes into the second
half, the match was interrupted, because many Corinthians fans entered the
pitch, trying to punch the players of their team. Sad scene...

GRÊMIO 0
VASCO 1 : Jorginho 69

Bad match, with many rough plays and little goalmouth action. The only goal
came on the 69th minute, when Jorginho poked in after a scramble in front of
Grêmio's goal.

Attendance : 34,486

19 NOVEMBER 2000

PALMEIRAS 2 : Magrão 21, Tuta 38
GUARANI 0

This was the only clash of the weekend where both teams were battling for
qualification to the playoffs (the winner would qualify; a tie would see
Guarani through). Palmeiras showed more spirit and commitment, and ended
up as winners.

SANTOS 4 : Dodô 16, Claudiomiro 41, Anderson Luís 74, Edmundo 88
BOTAFOGO CARIOCA 1 : Donizete 36

Santos bid farewell to the João Havelange Cup and sunk Botafogo's dream of
qualification in the process. It would be the ultimate absurdity if the poor
team from Rio de Janeiro managed to qualify for the playoffs, and this match
showed why. Even playing with no motivation, Santos easily ripped apart
Botafogo's defence, and got one of their best showings in the competition.
Sadly, it was too late for them.

Red Card : Sandro (Botafogo Carioca)

INTERNACIONAL 2 : Fábio Rochemback 19, Rodrigão 32
JUVENTUDE 1 : Marcos Paulo 45

With this victory over state rivals Juventude, Internacional ensured their
place in the playoffs. In fact, after Fábio Rochemback's goal in the 19th
minute, Inter's victory was never in doubt.

FLAMENGO 3 : Reinaldo 6, Jorginho 72, Alex 83
VITÓRIA 2 : Alan Delon 53, Artur 61

Flamengo played surprisingly well, and sunk Vitória's slim hopes of
qualification. The home team scored first, through Reinaldo, but Vitória
came back with two goals. Jorginho tied the match again for Flamengo and
Alex scored the game winner after a beautiful individual play by Edílson.

VASCO 0
SÃO PAULO FC 4 : Fábio Simplício 19, 30, Valkmar (og) 64, Beto 84

São Paulo got a huge morale boost with this four-goal mauling over Vasco.
What killed the team from Rio de Janeiro were their defensive frailties,
gifting three goals to São Paulo.

OTHER RESULTS

PAYSANDU 1 : Sandro 3
REMO 1 : Jurinha 30
(Remo wins 4x3 on aggregate and qualifies for the final playoffs)

After losing the first leg 3x2, Paysandu needed a win to avoid elimination.
And they had a good start, taking the lead on the 3rd minute, but Remo
managed to tie the match on the 30th. In the second half, the home team
pressed forward, but they were unable to create scoring chances. With four
minutes to go, there was a curious play : Robinho scored a goal for Remo, but
the referee waved it off due to "the presence of unauthorised personnel
inside Paysandu's box". After that incident, there was a major bust up, and
one player was sent off.

Red Card : Tico (Paysandu)

BRAZILIAN CHAMPIONSHIP - WHITE AND GREEN MODULES - FINAL

MALUTROM 3 : Ednelson 63, Silvio 67, Flávio 89
UBERLÂNDIA 2 : Leandro Diniz 56, Serginho 71
(Malutrom wins 4x3 on aggregate and qualifies for the final playoffs)

After a dull first half, the match came to life when Leandro Diniz opened
the scoring for Uberlândia. But it took just two minutes for Malutrom to
score twice and take the lead. In the 71st minute, Serginho scored for
Uberlândia, tying the match at 2x2. Since there is no away goals rule, it
looked like the match would be decided on the penalty shootout. But in the
last minute of play Flávio was brought down inside Uberlândia's box, and the
referee awarded Malutrom a penalty. Flávio stepped up and scored from the
spot.
