JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

8 NOVEMBER 2000

SPORT 4 : Nildo 2, 91, Taílson 46, Adriano 66
SÃO PAULO FC 3 : Marcelo Ramos 45, 86, Rogério Pinheiro 49

São Paulo came from behind three times, but couldn't avoid defeat. Nildo
scored Vitória's first goal on the 2nd minute. On the half-hour mark,
Belletti was sent off for his second bookable offence (he received the first
yellow card just two minutes earlier), leaving São Paulo with ten men. But
the Tricolor managed to tie the match in a counter attack, capitalised by
Marcelo Ramos. In the first play of the second half, Taílson put Vitória
back ahead with a classy goal. But just a few minutes later Rogério Pinheiro
tied the match again. Right after that goal, Leonardo and Ayala exchanged
punches, and were both sent off. In the 65th, Sport took the lead again in a
perfect free kick by Adriano. But once again São Paulo tied the match,
thanks to a free kick converted by Marcelo Ramos. A couple of minutes after
that goal, Ilan was sent off. At that point, the visitors had only eight men
on the pitch, against ten Vitória players. So the home team pressed forward,
and eventually scored their fourth, with Nildo.

Red Cards : Leonardo (Sport), Belletti (São Paulo FC), Ayala (São Paulo FC),
Ilan (São Paulo FC)

SANTOS 2 : Claudiomiro 3, Dodô 66
PORTUGUESA 0

Portuguesa's slim hopes of qualifying were dealt a heavy blow after this
defeat. Santos ended a seven-game winless streak. In their first scoring
chance of the match, the Peixe found the net. In a free kick Robert sent the
ball into the area, Edmundo passed it to Claudiomiro, who headed it in from
close range. There were few chances afterwards; most of them coming on
long-range shots. One of the few exceptions came on the 66th minute, when
Santos doubled their lead. Robert made a great play and hit the crossbar,
the rebound fell to Leo, who passed to Rincón. The Colombian passed to Dodô,
who scored.

PALMEIRAS 3 : Tuta 12, Basílio 18, Juninho 38
VASCO 0

Palmeiras beat Vasco with surprising ease. The home team attacked from the
beginning and they opened the scoring on the 12th minute. Gilmar crossed and
Tuta, all alone in the box, deflected the ball in. Six minutes later,
Palmeiras doubled their lead. Basílio received a long ball, out-ran the
defenders and fired a crossed shot, which hit the post before going in. In
the 38th, Juninho received a long pass, which put him face to face with
goalkeeper Élton. The Palmeiras player rounded the keeper and made it 3x0.
With the outcome already decided, the second half was tame.

GOIÁS 3 : Evair 50, Dill 88, 93
FLUMINENSE 3 : Roger 5, Jorginho 13, Magno Alves 72

Dill led an incredible comeback for Goiás in the final minutes to earn a
share of the points. Fluminense opened the scoring in a free kick by Roger,
and Jorginho doubled their lead on the 12th. Fabinho, from Fluminense, was
sent off before the end of the first half, after hitting Josué. On the 48th
minute, Evair put Goiás back on the game with a nice goal. He dribbled the
goalkeeper and two defenders before shooting to the empty net. But
Fluminense made it 3x1 against the run of play, on a penalty kick converted
by Magno Alves. All seemed lost for the home team, but in the 88th minute
Dill gave some hope for the fans with a goal. And in the third minute of
injury time Dill struck again, tying the match with a superb bicycle kick.

Red Card : Fabinho (Fluminense)
Attendance : 24,745

GRÊMIO 3 : Warley 8, 67, Ronaldinho Assis 47
ATLÉTICO PARANAENSE 0

Warley and Ronaldinho Gaúcho showed all their skill on this match. The first
scored two goals, and the latter made many of his trademark runs. The first
goal came on the 8th minute, when Warley picked up the rebound of a free
kick and scored from close range. Grêmio's second came two minutes after the
break, when Ronaldinho was brought down inside the box. The young attacker
converted the ensuing penalty kick. On the 67th, Warley started a
counter-attack, made a neat passing play with Zinho, and scored his second
goal of the night.

SANTOS 3 : Edmundo 12, 75, Rincón 63
SPORT 1 : Ricardinho 70

Edmundo played his best match on the season, and it was against the team of
the Brazilian National Team coach, Émerson Leão. It was the 'Animal' who
scored the first goal, heading home after a free kick by Robert. On the 63rd
minute, Edmundo made a perfect pass to Rincón, who entered the box and
scored Santos' second. Sport scored a goal on the 70th, but five minutes
later the home team restored their two-goal lead. And it was again Edmundo,
scoring with a beautiful volley.

INTERNACIONAL 3 : Fábio Rochemback 10, Rodrigão 27, 62
FLAMENGO 0

The lack of commitment of their stars once again cost dearly to Flamengo.
The team from Rio de Janeiro was completely dominated throughout the match.
Inter opened the scoring on the 10th minute. Fabiano went down the right
side and passed to Rodrigão. He then passed to Fábio Rockemback, who shot a
rocket, with no chance for the keeper. Internacional's second goal came on
the 27th minute. Rodrigão was left all alone, while the Flamengo defence was
complaining about an inexistent offside, and the Inter striker made no
mistake. In the 62nd, Rodrigão sealed victory for Internacional, heading
home a cross by Dênis.

Attendance : 35,234

SÃO PAULO FC 0
CORINTHIANS 0

Corinthians' losing streak is finally over, thanks to this draw with
archrivals São Paulo FC. But the Timão winless streak continues, reaching
now 11 matches. This was an even match, with few good scoring chances.
Corinthians managed to take control of the actions after the 70th minute,
when Sandro Hiroshi was sent off after receiving his second yellow card
(both for diving). On the 85th, Dinei scored for Corinthians, heading home a
cross, but the referee disallowed the goal, claiming that the striker had
pushed one of the defenders.

Red Card : Sandro Hiroshi (São Paulo FC)

VASCO 1 : Juninho 74
BOTAFOGO CARIOCA 2 : Zé Carlos 50, Rodrigo 65

Vasco played with many reserves and ended up on the losing side on this Rio
de Janeiro derby. The only noticeable moment of the first half happened when
Romário left the pitch, feeling some dizziness. The striker did not return
to the match. The first goal of the game came five minutes into the second
half, for Botafogo. After a cross from the right side, Zé Carlos headed the
ball in. Botafogo's second came fifteen minutes later. Rodrigo made a nice
individual play, entered the box and made a crossed shot, with no chance for
the keeper. On the 74th, Juninho scored a consolation goal for Vasco.

BAHIA 1 : Jorge Vagner 6
PALMEIRAS 2 : Juninho 17, Tuta 36

It was Bahia who scored the first goal, on the 6th minute of play. After a
cross from the left side, Jorge Vagner headed the ball, which deflected on a
defender, hit the post and came back to the player, who poked it in. Bahia
dominated the actions, but Palmeiras managed to tie the game on the 27th
minute, with a rocket shot by Juninho. On the 39th, Palmeiras completed its
comeback, with a goal by Tuta after a corner kick. Two Bahia players were
sent off on the second half, ending any hopes of a comeback for the home
team.

Red Cards : Maurício (Bahia), Vagner (Bahia)
