JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

2 NOVEMBER 2000

GUARANI 2 : Martinez 73, Fumagalli 82
PONTE PRETA 1 : Washington 56

Guarani came out as surprise winners in the Campinas derby. As in most
derbies, this was a hot contest, with some rough plays. In the 34th minute,
tempers boiled out. Marco Aurélio and Marcelo Souza started shoving each
other and were both sent off. The goals came only in the second half. After
a corner kick, Washington rose higher than the defenders and opened the
scoring for Ponte Preta. Guarani's game-tying goal came on a similar play.
After a corner, Martinez won the aerial battle against the defenders and
scored. With eight minutes to go, Fumagalli shot a low ball from outside the
area, which goalkeeper Adriano wasn't able to stop. It's been 13 years since
Ponte Preta last beat Guarani.

Red Cards : Marco Aurélio (Ponte Preta), Marcelo Souza (Guarani)

CRUZEIRO 3 : Viveros 40, Geovanni 71, Sérgio Manoel 84
CORINTHIANS 1 : Fernando Baiano 17

Corinthians' losing streak has now reached nine games. This time, the Timão
started playing well, and opened the scoring in the 17th minute. André shot
weakly from long-range, but goalkeeper Jéferson allowed a silly rebound to
Fernando Baiano, who just poked it in. Corinthians wasted a couple of good
chances to score, and in the 40th minute Cruzeiro tied the match on a
powerful shot by Viveros. The home team improved on the second half and they
took the lead in the 71st minute, when Geovanni was left all alone in the
box to head home. With six minutes to go, Sérgio Manuel shot from outside
the box to ensure victory for Cruzeiro.

GOIÁS 2 : Dill 62, Zé Carlos 90
GRÊMIO 2 : Warley 41, 42

Warley gave a comfortable two-goal lead for Grêmio with a couple of goals in
a two-minute spell. First, he shot from the edge of the box, with no chance
for goalkeeper Harley. Later, he collected a good pass by Ronaldinho Gaúcho
and one-timed it to the net. But 17 minutes after the break Dill put Goiás
back in the game. In the last minute of play, a perfect shot by Zé Carlos
tied the match for Goiás.

Attendance : 15,933

ATLÉTICO PARANAENSE 3 : Kléber 50, Lobaton 56, Alessandro 70
VITÓRIA 1 : Sandoval 22

The visiting team started the match better and opened the scoring on the
22nd minute. After a cross from the right side the ball ended up with
Sandoval, who made no mistake. Atlético's answer only came on the second
half. Rinaldo was brought down inside the box and Kléber converted the
ensuing penalty. Rinaldo was also involved in Atlético's second goal. He
went down the right side and made a low cross to Lobaton, who just poked it
in. In the 70th minute, Alessandro ensured victory for the home team. He
received the ball down the right side, dribbled a defender and beat
goalkeeper Paulo Musse with a crossed shot.

5 NOVEMBER 2000

FLUMINENSE 1 : Agnaldo 48
FLAMENGO 1 : Gamarra 64

The 'Fla-Flu' derby is the most traditional match of Rio de Janeiro. The
goals came only in the second half. In the 48th minute Paulo César crossed
from the right side and Agnaldo headed home. Fluminense wasted three good
chances to increase their lead before Gamarra tied the match for Flamengo,
completing a cross by Edílson. It was the first goal of the Paraguayan for
Flamengo.

Attendance : 72,457

CORITIBA 2 : Da Silva 4, 89
SANTOS 1 : Dodô 26

Santos hopes of qualifying were dealt a heavy blow with this defeat. Da
Silva opened the scoring for Coritiba in the 4th minute, heading home a
cross by Djames (nice name, isn't it?). In the 24th, Santos was awarded a
debatable penalty: Coritiba's midfielder Victor tried to avoid the ball
hitting his face and handled the ball inside the box. The referee considered
the handball intentional and awarded the penalty, which was converted by
Dodô. In the second half, Santos squandered a number of great chances to
score. And in the last minute of play, they were punished. Vítor crossed and
Da Silva just deflected it home.

Red Card : Reginaldo Araújo (Coritiba)

INTERNACIONAL 2 : Rodrigão 13, 52
VASCO 0

Vasco played this match with many reserves and Internacional took advantage
of that, dominating proceedings from the beginning. After a good passing
play, Rodrigão received the ball all alone in the box, and scored. Still in
the first half, defender Henrique was sent off for a professional foul,
which made Vasco's situation more difficult. Seven minutes after the break,
Rodrigão scored again for Internacional, one timing a cross from the right
side. In the last quarter of hour, Vasco created some scoring chances, but
to no avail.

Red Card : Henrique (Vasco)
Attendance : 39,483

PORTUGUESA 1 : Lúcio 74
PALMEIRAS 1 : Arce 35

This draw was a bad result for both teams. Arce opened the scoring in a
narrow angle free kick. It looked like a cross from the Palmeiras player,
but no one touched the ball, which ended up in the back of the net.
Portuguesa attacked more in the second half, and they eventually tied the
match in the 74th, through Lúcio.

Attendance : 9,300

BRAZILIAN CHAMPIONSHIP - YELLOW MODULE - SEMI-FINAL - SECOND LEG

REMO 1 : Robinho 64
PARANÁ 2 : Flávio 25, Márcio 80
(Paraná wins 2x1 on aggregate and qualifies for the playoffs)

The first leg of this encounter ended up goalless, so the winner of this
match would advance to the finals of the yellow module, thus assuring their
spot in the playoffs of the João Havelange Cup. Flávio opened the scoring
for Paraná on the 25th minute. Remo tied the match in the second half,
thanks to a debatable penalty, which was converted by Robinho. But ten
minutes from the end Márcio scored the game-winner for Paraná. Remo will
play against Paysandu, in the derby of the Pará state, to decide which one
will take the third spot in the decisive playoffs.

6 NOVEMBER 2000

SÃO CAETANO 5 : César 8, 53, Daniel 29, Adhemar 51, Marcão 65
PAYSANDU 4 : Jóbson 38, Rogério 61, Zé Augusto 64, Tico 93
(São Caetano wins 6x5 on aggregate and qualifies for the playoffs)

César put São Caetano in front from the penalty spot in the eight minute and
Daniel made it 2x0 in the 29th. But nine minutes later Jóbson put Paysandu
back in the game also in a penalty kick. Goals by Adhemar and César early in
the second half seemed to have decided the match in favour of São Caetano,
but in the 59th minute Daniel was sent off. Two minutes later, Rogério
scored for Paysandu and in the 64th Zé Augusto put the visitors back in the
game with a nice goal. But in the first play after the restart São Caetano
restored its two-goal lead through Marcão. In the 78th, Adhemar and
Leonardo were involved in a scuffle and were both sent off. In injury time,
Tico scored one more goal for Paysandu, but it was too late.

Red Cards : Daniel (São Caetano), Adhemar (São Caetano),
Leonardo (Paysandu)
