Three coaches were axed after the last weekend : Carlinhos (from Flamengo),
Giba (from Santos) and Carlos Alberto Parreira (from Atlético Mineiro).
Zagallo will take charge of 'Fla' and Parreira will be the next coach of
Santos. No words yet from Atlético.

SÃO PAULO FC 1 : Rogério 48
INTERNACIONAL 1 : Ronaldo 41
São Paulo FC reached an important milestone this match. They scored their
1,000th goal in the history of the Brazilian Championship (São Paulo FC is
the first team to reach that mark). And the fact was made more significant
because the goal was scored by goalkeeper Rogério, in a superb free kick,
which assured that the 'Tricolor' got a share of the spoils. Internacional
scored first, in the 41st minute, when Lucio crossed from the byline and
Ronaldo beat the defenders in the air, heading home. Besides the two goals,
it was a weak match.

PALMEIRAS 0
CRUZEIRO 1 : Fábio Júnior 42
Palmeiras' one month unbeaten run was ended by table-leaders Cruzeiro. There
were some good chances wasted by both sides and in the 42nd minute Fábio
Júnior opened the scoring. Marcos Paulo stole the ball on midfield and
passed to Oséas, who put Fábio Júnior all alone in front of the goal. The
striker only had to push the ball in. In the second half, Cruzeiro pressed
for the second goal, but to no avail.
Red Cards : Taddei (Palmeiras), Luizão (Cruzeiro)
GUARANI 3 : Fumagalli 33, Martinez 53, Marcus Vinícius 64
GRÊMIO 2 : Ronaldinho 25, Rodrigo Mendes 79
The first important play of the match came on the 14th minute, when
Ronaldinho shot a penalty kick in the post. Eleven minutes later Ronaldinho
redeemed himself. He received the ball outside the box, dribbled past
defender Lima and the goalkeeper and scored a nice goal. But eight minutes
later Marcus Vinícius was brought down inside Grêmio's box and Fumagalli
converted the spot kick. In the 40th minute, a lightning struck the stadium,
causing problems on the floodlights, which interrupted the match for 20
minutes. Eight minutes into the second half, Martinez put Guarani ahead,
poking the ball in after a scramble in the box. In the 64th, Marcus Vinícius
made it 3x1 and Rodrigo Mendes scored Grêmio's second on a free kick.
21 OCTOBER 2000
PORTUGUESA 2 : Irênio 34, 58
FLAMENGO 1 : Petkovic 25
This was the fifth consecutive defeat of Flamengo in the competition,
something that had never happened with the team from Rio de Janeiro in the
history of the Brazilian Championship. This defeat also caused the sacking
of coach Carlinhos. Flamengo was the better team on the early stages.
Petkovic opened the scoring, after a good long ball from Edílson. But nine
minutes later Irênio tied the match, in a perfect free kick. In the 58th,
Irênio put the home team ahead, with an unstoppable rocket from outside the
box. It was the 700th goal by Portuguesa in the history of the Brazilian
Championship. In the final minutes, Flamengo pressed forward, but they
couldn't break Portuguesa's defence.
GOIÁS 3 : Dill 32, Evair 46, Araújo 53
SANTOS 1 : André Luís 75
A five-game winless streak was enough to end Giba's reign in charge of
Santos. In this match, the 'Peixe' was completely dominated by Goiás, who
opened the scoring on the 32nd minute, through Dill. Marquinhos took a free
kick and the Santos defence left the top goalscorer of the championship all
alone inside the five-yard box. Of course he wouldn't miss. Right after the
break, the home team made it 2x0. Dill made a weak cross, which ended in the
foot of Santos defender André Luís. He clumsily tried to clear the ball, but
instead passed it to Evair, who just tapped it in. In the 53rd minute, Goiás
killed off the match with a goal by Araújo. With fifteen minutes to go,
André Luís scored a consolation goal for Santos.
Red Cards : Sangaletti (Santos)
VASCO 1 : Romário 47
GAMA 0
Gama played the entire first half on defence, and has to thank goalie Nílson
for keeping the match scoreless through the first 45 minutes. But just two
minutes into the second half Romário struck with a trademark move. He
received the ball on the edge of the box, outrun a defender and shot with no
chance for the keeper. Vasco created more good chances to score, but that
was all.
22 OCTOBER 2000
ATLÉTICO MINEIRO 2 : Marques 14, Ramon 57
GRÊMIO 2 : Anderson 53, Eduardo Costa 73
Atlético's poor form on the competition finally took the job of coach Carlos
Alberto Parreira. In this match, Atlético started the better, opening the
scoring with a strong, crossed shot by Marques. But after that the game lost
pace and the first half ended without further good moments. After the break,
Grêmio came to the attack, and tied the match with a potent shot from the
edge of the box by Anderson. But on the 57th minute Ramon put Atlético back
ahead, with a perfectly taken free kick. The home team then backed off,
allowing Grêmio to create many scoring chances. In the 73rd minute they tied
the match. The ball was crossed to Eduardo Costa, who headed home while the
Atlético defence was calling for an inexistent offside.
Attendance : 12,883
CORINTHIANS 1 : Marcelinho 72
FLUMINENSE 3 : Roger 14, Roni 41, Magno Alves 56
Roger opened up the scoring for Fluminense in the 14th minute, in a free
kick. After allowing the goal, Corinthians got nervous and seemed unable to
create good plays. Four minutes before halftime, the visitors made it 2x0.
Roni received the ball down the right side, passed by João Carlos and
scored. In the 56th minute, a bizarre mistake by defender João Carlos after
a corner kick allowed Magno Alves to make it 3x0. In the 72nd, Marcelinho
scored a consolation goal for Corinthians.
PONTE PRETA 5 : Hernani 28, Washington 32, 39, 44, Adrianinho 56
PALMEIRAS 1 : Galeano 60
A confuse play in the early stages decided the fate of the match. Palmeiras
defender Thiago Matias hit the face of Marco Aurélio. But referee Alfredo
dos Santos Loebeling got confused by the ensuing brawl, and sent off Biro,
who was playing his first match from Palmeiras since 1994. Ponte Preta took
advantage of that and on the 28th they opened the scoring through Hernani,
who poked in a cross from the right side. Four minutes later, Hernani made a
quick play and passed the ball to Washington, who just deflected it in. In
the 39th, Washington dribbled past defender Paulo Turra and the goalkeeper,
scoring a beautiful goal. In the last minute of the first half, Washington
completed his hat trick. Daniel shot from long range and the ball deflected
on the attacker, making it 4x0. The second half was just a formality.
Adrianinho made it 5x0 in the 56th, and Galeano scored the lonely Palmeiras
goal four minutes later.
Red Cards : Biro (Palmeiras), André Santos (Ponte Preta)
SÃO PAULO FC 2 : França 35, Souza 67
GUARANI 2 : Martinez 77, Jacques 88
São Paulo FC threw away two points in this match. Leading 2x0 with less than
fifteen minutes to go, victory seemed assured for the home team. But on the
74th, there was a power failure on the floodlights (that's the second
straight time it happened in a Guarani match), causing a 16 minute
interruption on the match. After that break, Guarani seemed a different
team, and they soon got on the board through Martinez. With two minutes to
go, Jacques tied the match.

Flamengo V Vasco
In the greatest derby of Rio de Janeiro, Flamengo - Vasco, a collection of
the most highly rated Brazilian forwards and play-makers showed up at the
legendary Maracana.
For Vasco, prima-donna ROMARIO, Britanic JUNINHO, the Paulista VIOLA, the
other JUNINHO, fast man EULLER, etc.
For Flamengo, the likes of "too good for Parma" ALEX, overpriced DENILSON,
diabolic EDILSON, phony ATHIRSON, etc.
But the star of the night was not any of them, but lazy and fat Serbian
DEJAN PETKOVIC!! (ROMARIO barely touched the ball, given the implacable
marking of GAMARRA and JUAN; EDILSON was also brilliant, for the first time
as a Flamenguista)
Final score :
FLAMENGO 4-0 VASCO
Goals : PETKOVIC (free kick), ADRIANO (assisted by PET), PETKOVIC,
EDILSON (penalty kick)
