JOÃO HAVELANGE CUP - 1ST STAGE

4 OCTOBER 2000

BAHIA 1 : Iranildo 25
VITÓRIA 0

The derby from Salvador was the biggest attendance in the João Havelange cup
so far. But the 64,000 people that came to the Fonte Nova stadium were
disappointed to watch a dull game, which never ignited. The match started with
a one-hour delay, due to problems with the floodlights. The only goal of the night
came on the 25th minute. Iranildo took a free kick, the ball bounced on the wall
and fooled goalkeeper Paulo Musse.

Attendance : 64,078

SÃO PAULO FC 1 : Rogério 45
GRÊMIO 1 : Warley 90

This was a show by Rogério Ceni. The São Paulo goalkeeper not only made a
handful of brilliant saves and stopped a penalty to keep his team on the game
but also scored the first goal of the match, on a superbly-taken free kick. On the
second half, Grêmio created few chances and every time they shot on goal,
there was Rogério to stop the ball. That situation only changed in injury time,
when Warley headed home after a cross.

VASCO 4 : Juninho 'Pernambucano' 24, 70, Nasa 43, Pedrinho 88
ATLÉTICO MINEIRO 0

This night belonged to Juninho (not the one that came from Middlesbrough).
Vasco dominated from the start and it was only natural when Juninho opened
the scoring, with a shot from the edge of the box. At the 39th minute, Célio Silva
blatantly held Euller's jersey and he was sent off. After that, any hopes of a
recovery by Atlético were dashed. In the 43rd, Euller crossed from the right side,
Romário faked a shot and the ball ended up with Nasa, who calmly scored. After
the break, Vasco maintained its dominance, but slowed the pace. Romário made
a nice pass to Juninho, who made it 3x0. With two minutes to go, Pedrinho
scored Vasco's fourth goal, in a long-range shot.

Red Card : Célio Silva (Atlético Mineiro)
Attendance : 6,959

SANTA CRUZ 0
SPORT 3 : Adriano 38, Leonardo 62, 81

As expected, Sport came out as winners in the derby from Pernambuco. The
match was balanced until the 27th minute, when Maricá, from Santa Cruz, was
sent off for hitting an opponent. It didn't take long for Sport to capitalise on their
numerical advantage. Nildo crossed low from the right side. Adriano collided with
goalkeeper João Carlos and somehow the ball went in. After the break, Nildo
again crossed from the right side and it was Leonardo's turn to deflect the ball
into the goal. With nine minutes to go, an identical play saw Leonardo make it
3x0.

Red Card : Maricá (Santa Cruz)

7 OCTOBER 2000

INTERNACIONAL 1 : Elivélton 63
GRÊMIO 2 : Ronaldinho Assis 75, Warley 81

Grêmio got a sensational comeback victory to win the derby from Porto Alegre,
known as 'Grenal' (GREmio x internacioNAL, got it?). The match was ill tempered,
with Grêmio coach Celso Roth being the first to hit the showers, because of
complaining after the referee fail to show the red card to an Internacional
player. All goals came on the second half. Although it was Grêmio who was
playing better, Internacional managed to open the scoring thanks to a mistake
by defender Nenê, who tried to dominate the ball inside his own box and ended
up losing it to Rodrigão, who passed it to Elivélton. The striker then flipped the
ball over a defender and scored a nice goal. Five minutes later, the match became
tense. After the referee had stopped play due to an offside, Grêmio keeper Danrlei
bumped into Fabiano, sparking a mass brawl, that saw three players dismissed
(two from Internacional). With one more man on the pitch, Grêmio increased its
dominance and tied the match through Ronaldinho Assis, who converted a penalty
kick. With nine minutes to go, Warley scored the game-winner, heading home a
cross by Itaqui.

Red Cards : Fábio Rochemback (Internacional), Fabiano (Internacional),
Ânderson (Grêmio)
Attendance : 36,534

BOTAFOGO CARIOCA 3 : Donizete 10, Dênis 37, Sandro 62
FLAMENGO 1 : Petkovic 75

Flamengo's stars were once again humiliated by weaker opposition. And this
time it was worse, because the defeat came against city rivals Botafogo. It was
Alex's debut on Flamengo, and it was an awful one. He couldn't make good
plays and was brought off in the second half, under heavy boos from his the
Flamengo fans. In the 10th minute, goalkeeper Júlio César (who was playing
injured) attempted to clear a long pass outside the box, but his clearing shot
was took weak, and fell to Donizete, who easily shot into the open goal. Eight
minutes before the break, Misso took a free kick from the right side. Goalkeeper
Clêmer (who replaced the injured Júlio César) stood nailed to the ground, as
well as the other Flamengo defenders. The ball then hit the leg of Dênis and
slowly went in. After the break, there was more humiliation for Flamengo.
Sandro took a free kick and the wall simply opened, letting the ball pass through,
with no chance for the goalkeeper. Later, Petkovic scored a consolation goal for
Flamengo from the penalty spot.

CORINTHIANS 2 : Luizão 41, Luiz Mário 93
PORTUGUESA 3 : Édson 43, 63, Vinícius 87

This defeat cost the job to coach Oswaldo Alvarez. Vadão was sacked from
Corinthians one day after the match. Candinho, current caretaker-manager of
the Brazilian National Team, will take over the job. The first 40 minutes of the
match were boring. In the first good chance of the game, Corinthians opened
the scoring through Luizão, who poked home on a rebound by goalkeeper Roger.
But two minutes later Portuguesa tied the match. Édson easily dribbled past
Scheidt and scored. In the 63rd minute, it was João Carlos' turn to be
humiliated by Édson, who put Portuguesa in front. With three minutes to go,
the 'Lusa' ensured victory thanks to a mistake by the referee, who awarded
them a penalty kick, when the foul was committed out of the box. Vinícius
scored from the spot. In injury time, Luiz Mário scored one more goal for the
'Timão'.

VITÓRIA 5 : Sinval 9, 25, Vítor 13, 57, Sandoval 40
SÃO PAULO FC 1 : Beto 3

São Paulo FC started the match very well, with a goal on the third minute. Beto
took a free kick and a communication mistake between the defenders and
goalkeeper Paulo Musse allowed the ball to go untouched into the net. But that
was all. The other 87 minutes belonged to the home team. In the 9th, Sinval
dominated the ball on his chest and scored the goal on a gorgeous bicycle kick.
Four minutes later, Vitória took the lead. Vítor crossed the ball, which was
deflected by defender Rogério Pinheiro, taking goalkeeper Alencar out of the
play. In the 25th, Sinval scored again, this time from the penalty spot. From then
on, Vitória was content on letting the time pass. With five minutes to go on the
first half, Sandoval made it 4x1, and on the second half Vítor completed the
mauling.

ATLÉTICO MINEIRO 2 : Valdir 39, André 47
GOIÁS 1 : Dill 74

Atlético fully deserved this victory. The 'Galo' wasted several chances before
Valdir opened the scoring on the 39th minute. Cacá went down the right side
and crossed to Valdir, who rose higher than the defenders and headed home.
Right after the break, Lincoln made a nice play on the right side and passed to
André, who had no problems to score. In the 74th minute, Dill scored the
consolation goal for Goiás, from the penalty spot.

Attendance : 3,491

SANTOS 3 : Valdo 25, Edmundo 65, Ronaldão 69 (og)
PONTE PRETA 3 : Piá 53, Marco Aurélio 82, 92

Thrilling match. Santos seemed to have the game under control, leading 3x1
with only eight minutes to go. But then came Marco Aurélio and halved Ponte
Preta's deficit, completing a pass from Macedo. Two minutes into injury time
Marco Aurélio struck again, in spectacular fashion. He managed to score the
game-tying goal directly from a corner kick! Because of this result, Giba's
position as coach of Santos is seriously threatened.

Red Card : Piá (Ponte Preta)
