Shearer Donates Testimonal Money To Charity

In an act of generousity mirroring several other footballers (Roy Keane and Colin Cooper), Alan Shearer has donated the (€2.43 million) proceeds from his testiomonial match to 14 local charity. He said :

"I was lucky enough to live my dream, to play football and get paid for it. There are not many people in the world who look forward to getting up in the morning, and being paid an unbelievable amount of money for doing so. I was one of them, so for me to have taken the money would not have been right. It was an easy decision to give it to the charities, the difficult part was deciding which charities to give it to. We literally had hundreds writing and asking, but we decided on the 14 and I apologise to all the people that unfortunately did not get anything but the 14 that did, I know they are very, very grateful."

"I am just delighted. I have said a tremendous thank you to everyone but the main thank you has to go to all the people who have paid their money for the dinners
but also for the game. That was just unbelievable and will live with me for ever. They are the ones who have paid their money, they are the ones who have made it happen and I am delighted that so many people can benefit from that."

Platini Wants Champions League Limit

Former Juventus and France legend Michel Platini, who will stand for presidency
of UEFA next year, has outlined some of his plans :

"Four clubs (from the top four countries in the Champions League) are too many,
for the country itself, the fans and TV rights. Three should be the limit. There are not enough national champions in the last 32 of the tournament and that cannot be right."

In another proposal which will prove unpopular Platini ruled against any plans to introduce video evidence :

"We have to help referees who can't see everything and I believe two more assistants on either side of the pitch would do this. It would help judging offside decisions as well as a range of off-the-ball incidents. I am totally against refereeing by video. Where would it stop? If you start with videos, you will finish with videos and there would be no more referees."

Real Moan About Chelsea's Wealth

In a statement of huge irony Real Madrid's new president Ramon Calderon bemoaned Chelsea's spending power following years of boasting by the club's former president of the galactico's wealth :

"I think it's a problem. It's putting the prices very high. He is paying a lot of money for players but we have to compete with it. In Abramovich's case, he admitted to having lost €220 million last season. For me, it's very dangerous. You don't know how long those people are going to stay in soccer. If somebody decides to leave, it's going to be a problem."

Simon Greenberg, Chelsea's director of communications, argued the money spent
under Abramovich went back into football :

" A very small amount of his current investment went on purchasing the club. The
rest of it has gone into football and filtered down through football."

Silva Speaks After Amputation

Former Uruguay international Dario Silva spoke after having part of his leg amputated following a car accident in late September :

"This would have worried me if it had happened at 20 or 22 years old, in my prime. If it happened before I went to Europe it would have made life much harder but thanks to God, and yes I can thank Him, it has come at the end of my career, when I wanted to stay in Uruguay anyway. Like I said before, I didn't even want to live anymore. When I realised I had lost a leg, I wanted to die. I've lost a match but I want to recover and fight on to qualify. I have to continue going forward."

Klose Rules Out Bayern Move

Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose has ruled following in the footsteps of many other German internationals in joining Bayern Munich :

"Bayern are a top club but I would like to emphasise that if I do change clubs I
want the move to be abroad. We will sit down over the winter break and discuss
my contract. Who said I want to go next year? I want to play abroad with a big
club at some stage in my career but it does not need to be 2007."
