PSG Suspend Vice President

€20,00 of the clubs funds, using a club credit card and chequebook, for his own use.

Rooney Investigated For Nightclub Brawl

A 22 year old student has told Greater Manchester Police that he was assaulted by
Wayne Rooney at the Tiger Tiger nightclub at 1.00 am. A spokesman for the player
said :

"Wayne was approached by a man he had never met in a menacing and threatening
manner. At no stage did Wayne respond. The man was immediately asked to leave
the nightclub in the company of security guards. It is understood that Rooney was
being taunted over his move from the club he supported as a boy to Manchester
United."

Fiore Blasts New Coach

"Ruben Baraja gets injured and the Coach decides to play a defender in midfield
instead of me. I was considered as one of the best midfielders in Europe when I was
in Italy and I just don't understand why I can't find any space in the team. I'm just
waiting for Palop (reserve goalkeeper) to be selected ahead of me now. I don't like
tacticians who explain their decisions to players because I think they are just telling
untruths. Lopez says he's happy with my work but then he never lets me play. He's
not acted in a professional manner. I think he'll be fined." - Stefano Fiore

Seedorf Refused Blood Test

"I refused to take a blood test after our 2-1 win at Atalanta. It was nothing out of
the ordinary, as there is a choice and I chose not to give a blood sample. I want to
make it absolutely clear that I opted not to give blood because the urine sample
can take a long time after you've played a match and are tired. I had the option not
to take this test and took that option, but it doesn't make my anti-doping test any
less thorough. I don't understand how the fact that Gattuso and Pancaro said no
could emerge in the first place. There is a law to protect privacy in Italy and yet we
are reading names and surnames of doctors. It's all very strange." - Clarence Seedorf

Gattuso Hits Back in Drugs Row

"Either you do things seriously or you don't do them at all. For months no-one has
seen for blood tests and then now they bring up this new thing. At any rate, I don't
see where the problem is given that nothing is obligatory. We should plan the
controls well, making them equal for everyone and then I would be happy to adhere.
I am going to do the blood analysis tonight and everyone can come and have a look.
I'll even give 10 litres if they want. I have nothing to hide because my doping is hot
chilli peppers and hard work in the week." - Gennaro Gattuso

Gattuso was not happy with the conditions at the anti-doping room :

"I went into the anti-doping room at the Olimpico, it was 11.30 at night and I was
stressed out from the match. There were 10 people there and plenty of confusion
and sealed syringes thrown to one side. We aren't animals, not me or my fellow
players. We can't go on without clear regulations."

Huge Slump in Profits for Man United

Manchester United recorded a 54% slump in half year profits from €41.30 million
down to €17.90 million this year. The figures are blamed on investment in new
signings and player wages (Wayne Rooney, Alan Smith and Gabriel Heinze).

Milan Duo Skip Blood Tests

Gennaro Gattuso and Giuseppe Pancaro opted not to give blood samples following
the clubs victory over Roma at the Olimpico. A urine sample is compulsory but
have the option on whether to give a blood test.

English Clubs Call For Change in Champions League Format

Manchester United and Arsenal have whined about having to face other top clubs
in the knockout stages of the Champions League :

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said :

"At the moment we effectively have a random draw after the group stage. Maybe
we should use a system where the holders are rated number one and they play the
16th ranked team, number two versus 15, and so on. It's not good for the big clubs,
not good for TV and sponsors if there are no Spanish clubs in the quarter-finals.
When the draw for the group stage is made, each club's co-efficient is used. Given
it is unlikely we will ever go back to a situation of having two group stages, maybe
we should use a system during the knock-out phase that also reflects the rankings.
AC Milan were discussing this before we played them, so it is not a knee-jerk
reaction."

Gill's comments followed those of Arsene Wenger :

"You can't afford to have Real Madrid and Manchester United, big clubs who invest
so much money, going out in the last 16. You will have a revolt if it continues like
that. Seeding teams is a possibility. I don't think the formula at the moment helps
the best teams. Maybe Uefa will use their ranking lists to influence the draw in
future."

Kluivert Calls Time on International Career

"To be honest, if I was called up I do not think that I would go. It does not bother
me if I am called up or not. That chapter in my life is probably closed. All I care
about is Newcastle United and doing well for Newcastle. I am desperate to stay
here because I am enjoying my football and I am very happy on and off the pitch."
Patrick Kluivert

Chelsea Face Disciplinary Action

Chelsea are facing disciplinary action on the 31st of March for alleging that Frank
Rijkaard met with former referee Anders Frisk at half time during the first leg of
Chelsea's last 16 Champions League clash with Barcelona in the Nou Camp.
A statement by UEFA read :

"UEFA today announced the opening of disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea FC,
head coach Jose Mourinho, assistant manager Steve Clarke and security official
Les Miles, for making false declarations, notably in the complaint sent by
Chelsea FC following the UEFA Champions League match played against
FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on 23 February 2005. By further disseminating these
wrong and unfounded statements, Chelsea FC allowed its technical staff to
deliberately create a poisoned and negative ambience amongst the teams and to
put pressure on the refereeing officials."

Richards Forced to Retire

30 year old Tottenham defender Dean Richards has been forced to retire due to
medical reasons. There were rumours that Richards had a brain tumour but he has
been suffering from an inner ear problem and was advised by doctors to quit. In a
statement he said :

"Football has been a huge part of my life and it has been a miserable time for me
sitting out this season and awaiting test results. I am obviously deeply
disappointed to be giving up the sport I love but have discussed the results with my
family and my representatives and it is the only choice. I should like to thank the
club, the medical team and my team-mates for all the support they have given me
through this."

Richards was signed from Southampton by Glen Hoddle for a fee of €11.50 million.

Inter Play Waiting Game

Inter have refused to rule Adriano out of the Champions League derby clash with
Milan after the striker suffered a knee injury following a collision with Fiorentina
midfielder Enzo Maresca. A statement on Inter's website read :

"Adriano underwent a magnetic resonance test this morning to assess the extent
of the knee injury suffered in the first half of yesterday's Serie A Week 29 match
at home to Fiorentina. The results of the test, carried out by professor Eugenio
Genovese in accordance with the Inter medical staff at the Ospedale del Circolo,
have confirmed a sprain of the collateral medial ligament in the player's right
knee. The Brazilian will rest for a week, after which further tests will be carried
out. A rehabilitation programme will then be scheduled."

Miccoli Blow for Fiorentina

Fiorentina striker Fabrizio Miccoli has been ruled out for three weeks with an achilles
tendon injury. Fiorentina are already without first choice striker Valeri Bojinov.

Barca President Calls for Mourinho Ban

"Uefa should study carefully a possible ban for Mourinho because he deployed a
cunning strategy that provoked the retirement of a referee. He behaved improperly
and lied by saying our technical team went into the officials' dressing room.
I am confident that Uefa will take measures so this never happens again."
Barcelona president Joan Laporta

Ronaldo Reacts To Racist Abuse

Real Madrid striker Ronaldo has explained why he throw a water bottle into the
crowd after being substituted on Sunday :

"When I got close to the bench two young lads shouted racist insults against me
and my mother. I reacted in the wrong way, but the insults were very bad. It was
nothing, really."

O'Neill Desperate to Keep Bellamy

"If Craig Bellamy wants to stay, then we will have to find the money to keep him.
The goals he scored (a hat-trick against Dundee United) were outstanding from an
outstanding player. The first one was a cracker and the second one was brilliant,
almost on the half-turn, and his third goal was also excellent. I realise the financial
problems in terms of a package, but, all things being equal, I would like to stay."
Celtic coach Martin O'Neill

Germany Line-up Friendlies

Hosts Germany have announced three friendlies in preparation for the 2006
World Cup. On the 7th of September they face South Africa and China on the
12th of October. On the 22nd of March 2006 the Germans will face the United
States, the team they defeated in the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals. Germany
will also face Turkey in Istanbul four days before the clash with China.

Milan Duo Extend Contracts

Paolo Maldini has signed a one year extension to his contract taking him into his
23rd season at the age of 39. Maldini will now retire at the end of June 2007.

Massimo Ambrosini has signed a two year contract extension until June 2008.
Ambrosini had been linked with a move to Real Madrid or Juventus at the end of
the season.

Platini Turned London Giants

"I had proposals from English clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham and my wife wanted
to go to London but I decided against it because you play too many games in
England, and I went to Italy. You don't have such a heavy schedule in Italy. In five
years in Serie A, I was never injured." - Michel Platini

Wenger Questions England's US Tour

"On the one hand you want the England national team to have a four-week break
before the World Cup in 2006 but then you don't want to give them a holiday after a
long and exhausting season. I cannot understand the logic of going to the United
States. Half of the team will pull out anyway and the other half will be going after
having played 55 games. Next season will start early anyway because of the World
Cup and that means that the close season this year will be short. I cannot
understand why international teams who are preparing for the World Cup have a
busy summer this year. The most important thing is to give the players a breather."
Arsene Wenger

Moyes Calls for Calm Ahead of Derby

Everton coach David Moyes has tried to play down the importance of Sunday's
Merseyside derby. Everton are in 4th place, 7 points ahead of Liverpool.

"I am doing my best to play everything down. We are in a comfortable position right
now and whatever happens on Sunday we know we will still be in fourth place,
the position we have held almost all season. Everybody knows the importance of
the game and I do not need to impress that on anyone. We know that the position
we are in is the one all but the top three in the division would love to be in. It is a
healthy position but we also know that if we do not play well that position will
dwindle away. I am trying to treat the game like any other, and we will go to
Anfield with our usual attitude and as always we want to win every game. And that
is what we will try to do on Sunday. I do not think that if we win it will make it
certain that we will qualify for the Champions League. Even 10 points' lead on
Liverpool will not be enough because they will not give up the chase. All I can do
is make sure we keep up the same levels of performance we have been producing
all season, and I can assure our fans that we will be doing our best
to continue the way we have been playing." - David Moyes

Benitez Rules out Real Madrid Move

"I want to say clearly, I have a deal with Liverpool and I am very happy here and
grateful to the supporters and the board. My idea is to be here next season and to
win trophies with Liverpool. People talk a lot, and there are always rumours about
Spain but I see and hear the people here, the supporters. I am grateful to them
for their support, as well as the board's. I am very happy here and want to win
trophies with Liverpool next season and I am not thinking about the future, I am
only thinking about three points and reducing the gap on Everton. I do not like to
hear rumours, I want to make it clear I have a deal with Liverpool and want to stay
here to win trophies." - Rafael Benitez

Ferguson Claims Ronaldo Could be World's Best

"He has enormous talent. He has two good feet, an extraordinary technique, he
works well and above all he is very fast, These rare characteristics, which combined
with a little experience, can make him not one of the best, but the best in the world.
Then there is another aspect: he has enormous courage. He does not get intimidated
on the pitch. He treats the ball like a toy. He takes pleasure in playing."

Beckenbauer Considers UEFA presidency

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has said he would consider applying for
the UEFA presidency :

"First of all it needs to be confirmed that (UEFA President Lennart) Johannson is
stepping down. Then if I have the backing of the DFB and UEFA I am prepared to
make serious thoughts about the job."

Beckenbauer would be the safe choice given the ideas of the other leading candidate
Michel Platini include who merging the Champions League and UEFA Cup into one
knockout competition.

Ferguson Rules out Retirement

"Sometimes I ask 'do I still have energy?' but then I look to my side and I see
businessmen in their 80s, full of energy, clarity and strength who continue to work
and I think 'If they, at 82 can, why can't I at 63?'. I am willing to stay on. We are
building a new great team, we have some of the best talent in the world and some
youngsters who will be sure bets in this game and also this business. Why would
I retire?" - Alex Ferguson
