Kaka's Big Match Promise

Milan playmaker Kaka' gave his thoughts ahead of the clubs Champions League
match against  Manchester United :

"We are more than ready for this. Our confidence is high after going top of the
Serie A table, even if we aren't exactly playing our best football, so I'm not worried.
Manchester United are a fearsome prospect. They have experience in the form of
Paul Scholes and Roy Keane, then young talents like Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne
Rooney. Their real danger man is undoubtedly Rooney, as he can always make the
difference."

On his lack of goals this season :

"It is true that I don't score as much, but I have provided a few more assists.
Besides, just to prove everyone wrong I'll net against both Man U and Inter. I am
sorry for my friend Adriano, but we'll win the derby 3-2 on Sunday."

Bridge Breaks Ankle

breaking his ankle during Sunday's 1-0 FA Cup defeat against Newcastle. Bridge
landed on his ankle after a challenge by Newcastle striker Alan Shearer.

Fourth Cruciate injury for Nowotny

Leverkusen's injury prone captain Jens Nowotny suffered the fourth cruciate ligament
injury of his career against Nurnberg on Sunday. Nowotny has been ruled out for the
rest of the season but the club's chief executive, Wolfgang Holzhauser, has
dismissed speculation that the 31 year old's career could be over :

"It says a lot for him that he has already come back from three such injuries and he
will manage it again"

Pitch Invader Jailed for 5 Months

Michael Lewis, who ran onto the pitch and confronted Robbie Savage during
Blackburn's FA Cup tie at Burnley has been jailed for 5 months. Lewis resisted arrest
and punched one of the policemen that tried to apprehend him. Lewis has also been
given a 10 year ban from all football grounds.

In court it emerged that Lewis was serving a three year banning order for being drunk
at a match and obstructing police officers in 2002. He was in breech of the ban
after attending Burnely's game at Millwall and jailed for 28 days. Lewis was involved
in similar incidents in 1990 and 1992 and in 1989 was jailed for 18 months for assault.

Mourinho Rules out Ronaldinho Move

"Ronaldinho could play in any team in the world and there's no manager in the world
so stupid as to say he wouldn't take him. The boy is absolutely fantastic but it's a
policy of building a team. Our team is still forming and developing. It is not a team
which has found its full potential. We know very well what we need to improve the
squad but I am very happy with what we have. I value the players who are already
at Chelsea. Also, from an economic point of view, we're not going to spend, spend,
spend every year and buy-and-sell, buy-and-sell, buy-and-sell every year. The time
must come for stability. Barcelona will not release Ronaldinho, which is good
because Barca need a player like him. I already have a full squad. The only one
I am looking for is a left-back because we sold Celestine Babayaro. We only have
Wayne Bridge and nobody else is naturally left-footed so I need another one."
Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho

Lippi Hoping for 2003 Repeat

Italy coach Marcello Lippi gave his thoughts on the Italian challenge in the
Champions League :

"Selfishly I dream that what happened two years ago could be repeated - three
Italian teams in the (Champions league) semi-final, it isn't impossible, and it would
be important for our players to again have the taste of big international wins, for my
Italy too."

"Milan have class but it will be hard, recently Manchester United found conviction and
awareness again. They win with ease, and they have those two young players,
Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who will become really great."

"Porto aren't the same they were with Mourinho but they are recovering important
players and they found their balance but Inter this season have done good things in
Europe."

"Real will be out for revenge (against Juventus). Then there is the return of Zidane,
Raul and Ronaldo. You have to not judge the Champions League based only on
league matches, it's a different thing."

Magath Expects Arsenal Demise

"Arsenal are a top team that could win the Champions League - if they were not
playing Bayern. The Dortmund game (Bayern beat Dortmund 5-0 at the weekend)
was a sign that we are ready to beat Arsenal. We are playing well and need not
fear any opponent. I am confident we will win. 5-0 would certainly be a good result
as we could travel to London with the pressure off." - Bayern coach Felix Magath

Albacete Sack Gonzalez

Albacete have sacked Jose Gonzalez after Sunday's 1-2 defeat against Numancia
left them in the relegation zone. Reserve team coach Martin Monteagudo will take
charge.

Capello - Real Fear Juve

"The fact that they left three first team players out (Zidane, Raul and Ronaldo) on
Saturday (in a 0-2 home loss against Athletic Bilbao) shows that they are worried.
Real have champions who can create a winning move at any time. I would say we
both have a 50-50 chance of qualifying for the last eight. They have changed the
way they play recently following the arrivals of Wanderley Luxemburgo and Arrigo
Sacchi. They are now more disciplined in defence which makes them much more
dangerous than before. We are in good shape though and fully focused on this
match. We have the ability to put in a great performance."

Butragueno Blasts Rumours

"We will do absolutely nothing in order to sign him (Adriano). He is a great player
but also a very young one. He has massive margins of improvement. Therefore for
the time being we will just wait. At the same time we have a very good relationship
with Inter. A lot of false things have been written. The supposed €174 million that
we have to spend? You have incorrect information."

Real Madrid vice-president Emilio Butragueno

Everton Will Ban Fan for Life

Everton's director of communications Ian Ross has promised to hand out a lifetime
ban to the fan responsible for throwing a coin at Manchester United goalkeeper
Roy Carroll during the clubs FA Cup clash. Carroll was struck on the head but didn't
suffer any serious injuries :

"We accept that we are responsible for the behaviour of our fans and we apologise
to Roy Carroll and the Manchester United team. It shouldn't happen but how can
you stop it? One mindless moron spoilt things for everyone else. There is no place
for that sort of thing at Goodison Park and when we discover the culprit he will be
banned for life."

Caniggia Retires

Former Argentina international Claudia Caniggia has announced his retirement
(six years too late) aged 38. Caniggia starred for Argentina in the 1990 World Cup
and scored the winner against sentimental favourites Brazil. Caniggia missed out
on an appearance in the final after being booked for diving in the infamous semi-final
clash against Italy. In an undistinguished club career Caniggia's clubs included Boca
Juniors, Roma and Rangers, with whom he won a league championship. Caniggia
was most recently at Qatar Club.

Zamparini U-turn on Guidolin

Palermo's volatile president Maurizio Zamparini has given coach Francesco Guidolin
a two year contract tying him to the club until 2007. Zamparini had told the press
Guidolin would be dismissed at the end of the season because of the supposed
defensive nature of their football. However after some impressive performances,
in particular against Juventus, Zamparini has changed his mind.

Palermo are strong contenders for a champions league place next season and unlike
the other clubs vying for 3rd and 4th place (Udinese, Sampdoria and Roma) have
excellent financial backing.

Chelsea Still Tracking Joaquin

"We did not have him signed (in the January transfer window) neither did I say not
to sign him. Joaquin is a very good player and I admit there was contact. We asked
and the other party replied, they spoke. Nothing has been discarded with regard to
him. We could try and sign him in June or December."

Kiraly Extends Stay at the Palace

Crystal Palace's goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly has signed an extension tying him to the
club until June 2009. The Hungarian international has established himself as one
of the best goalkeepers in the league since replacing the dreadful Julian Speroni.

Mourinho Welcomes UEFA Proposal

Jose Mourinho insists there will always be a place for English players in his team :

"We have three or four home players involved in every domestic match. I really
believe in home players. As a foreign manager, I feel responsible for the English
clubs and the English national team. I would never forget that and the future of
youth football at the club. The supporters fall in love with players they feel are the
club but I don't think you need to be made in the club to be part of the club.
I don't think Chelsea supporters have any doubt that Claude Makelele doesn't
want to win for Chelsea but it helps having English players. I want to have the
best young players in England. You have to show young kids and their parents that
they have a chance to succeed at this club."

Mourinho - Champions League is Mine

"Frank Rijkaard's history as a player can't be compared with my history, as his is
fantastic and mine is zero. As a manager though, my history cannot be compared to
his. He has zero titles and I have a lot of them. First of all, I have to defend what is
mine and the Champions League is mine at the moment.

"I'm the last manager to have won it, so it's my competition. I have to fight for
Chelsea and for myself, to defend my cup until the last moment. Maybe it's
because I won the Champions League that I had a big turn in my life and I could
come to a big football country like England. So the Champions League means
a lot to me, it's something unforgettable and something that I want to repeat."

Wenger Defends Foreign Policy

Arsene Wenger has leapt to the defence of his team after a squad featuring no
English players thrashed Crystal Palace on Monday :

"Some people can be surprised by the fact we had non-British players but we have
a club based on values, qualities and attitudes and, when I work with the players on
a daily basis, you don't look at where they come from. I didn't even notice when
we played the game because I feel what is important is people who love the club,
identify with the values and quality we want. Basically, I can't understand what is
behind that. Is it a non-acceptance of the difference or concern for the national
team? I don't know."

Wenger was however correct to suggest the English media's criticisms of the foreign
player influx were misplaced :

"So many players are valued so highly - Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney, David
Beckham, Michael Owen, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard are all rated hugely high
so I don't accept the real concern about the national team. You have never had as
good players as you have at the moment. For me, the biggest problem is they can
play in training with top-class players. It makes them improve, like students. Put a
gifted student in a bad class and he won't improve as quickly as he will in a good
class. I don't accept the England team concern. For me, the argument is not valid.
You are shocked you have foreign people that is mostly different but you have to
accept it. It is part of Europe"

Ronaldo Fined For Late Show

"Ronaldo arrived 40 minutes late for training on Tuesday, because of an airplane
delay and then was 15 minutes late on Wednesday .Discipline is the same for
everyone at the club." - Real Madrid media chief Antonio Garcia Ferreras

but after failing to submit the correct paperwork the couple threw a Valentine Day's
party for 250 guests which included many of the games biggest stars.

Barthez Facing Suspension for Spitting at Ref

Marseille and France goalkeeper Fabian Barthez is facing suspension after spitting
at a referee following an ill tempered friendly against Wydad Casablanca. A brawl
erupted in the 82nd minute when Marseille walked off the pitch following the
dismissal of defender Frederic Dehu. In a radio interview the referee,
Abdullah El Achiri, said :

"Normally he'd been substituted, but then he was back on the pitch and marching
towards me throwing insults. He finished up by spitting in my face."
