FEBRUARY 2001 Terim Quits Fiorentina Fatih Terim has quit as coach of Fiorentina. Terim arrived in Serie A having lead Galatasaray to victory in last year's UEFA Cup final. Despite a slow start and early elimination from the UEFA Cup, Fiorentina hit a rich vein of form towards the end of last year, defeating high flying Udinese, holding Juventus to a thrilling 3-3 draw in Turin and destroying Milan 4-0 at home. The club looked on course to mount a serious title challenge before contract talks with Terim broke down and he announced that he would leave Florence at the end of the season. No surprisingly, Fiorentina's form suffered. Former Sampdoria and Lazio playmaker, Roberto Mancini, will succeed Terim on Thursday. Terim was widely tipped to coach Milan next season. Given the clubs horrendous form under current coach Zaccheroni and their crucial Champions League match away to Galatasaray, Terim should (hopefully) be coach of the Italian giants later this week. Ancelotti Signs New Contract Carlo Ancelotti has extended his contract with Juventus until the end of next season. 10 Yard Experiment A Success The ten yard rule is expected to be introduced world-wide next season by FIFA following a successful trail in England and Scotland. The rule punishes teams whose players encroach from free kicks by moving the wall back ten yards. 24 FEBRUARY 2001 Batistuta - I Don't Like Football "When I finish my working day I don't like football. I don't like football like someone who's mad about it. It's a job and I'm a professional but I don't follow what's happening in other countries.". Coaching News Fabio Capello has extended his contract with Serie A league leaders Roma until 2003. Capello will earn £5 million a season, making him the highest paid coach in the World. The deal also includes a new house and a contract for a range of cosmetics called Don Fabio! Now for some wild rumours. Carlo Ancelotti is asking for an improved contract at Juventus. The club are unwilling to agree to his terms and have lined up former coach Marcello Lippi as his replacement! The press speculate that Ancelotti will become new coach of Milan with current Milan coach Alberto Zaccheroni joining neighbours Inter or Barcelona. Fatih Terim, who will leave Fiorentina at the end of the season, could end up at Parma. TV Deals Worldwide TV rights for FA Premiership matches have been sold for a combined fee of £178 in a three year deal with several channels/companies including Canal Plus and Newscorp, owned by Rupert Mordoch.
