Hartson Stays At Wimbledon

John Hartson move to Rangers has been called off after he failed a medical.

Thome To Sunderland

Brazilian defender Emerson Thome is holding talks with Sunderland after the
club agreed a fee of £3 million with Chelsea. Despite World Class performances
for Chelsea in the Champions League Thome has found himself benched in
favour of hospital pass merchant Frank Lebouef.

Perugia Case - Everybody Is Worried!

UEFA and FIFA will discuss the European Commission's plans to abolish the
transfer system in a meeting later today. The EC have given FIFA and UEFA
until the 20th of September to come up with an alternative to the current
transfer system. If the EC are not satisfied with the proposals they will press
ahead and abolish the transfer system.

The G14, the group of the most powerful clubs in Europe (Ajax, Barcelona,
Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Inter, Juventus, Liverpool, Manchester United,
Marseille, Milan, PSG, Porto, PSV and Real Madrid) will hold talks with the
EC over this issue. One would except they would be in favour of such a system
as it would allow the top clubs to sign players without having to pay
increasingly astronomic transfer fees. Representatives of the English
Premiership are also keen to meet with EC officials.

Deschamps Announces Retirement & Blasts Vialli

Didier Deschamps has mercifully announced his final match will be against
England this Saturday "It will be my last match for France but it will be a
euphoric occasion.". He also had a dig at former Chelsea coach Gianluca
Vialli "I fell very frustrated on the pitch and also in my relationships with
Vialli which were difficult or even impossible. It was hard because I had
a very different opinion of him as a player from the coach he became."

Little Buddha Back At Barca

Barca have taken former player De La Pena back to the Nou Camp on a years
loan from Lazio. The gifted midfielder has jobbed around several clubs after
failing to make a mark at Lazio when he first joined two seasons ago for
£10 million. Barca have also stated that both Boudewijn Zenden and Jari
Litmanen will remain at the club. Barca captain Josep Guardiola will be out
for 10 weeks following ankle surgery.

Valdano Returns To Real

Jorge Valdano will be appointed general manager of Real Madrid in succession
to Jose Martinez Pirri.

Rangers To Blow More Money

Rangers are close to signing Wimbledon striker John Hartson for a ridiculous
£7 million, ridiculous when you consider Ronald De Boer cost them £5.3
million.

Krankl

Hans Kankl is the new coach of Admira Moedling

30 AUGUST 2000

Ronald De Boer To Join Rangers

Ronald 'McDonald' De Boer is currently negotiating with Rangers after a
proposed move to Man United broke down probably because the so called
World's richest club were being tight as usual. Rangers hope to announce
the signing of De Boer later today. The fee is said to be in the region of
£6 million.

28 AUGUST 2000

Smith Gets England Call Up

Leeds teenage striker, Alan Smith, has been called up into the England squad
to face France this Saturday. Smith is unlikely to start and knowing Keegan
will play about 10 minutes.

Hooligan Players

Phil Babb and Mark Kennedy have been dropped from Ireland's squad to face
Holland. They were arrested for being drunk and disorderly, allegedly jumping
on a parked car. Well done. Some fans behave like idiots and now the players
have joined in.

BRAZIL ROUND-UP by Irineu de Carvalho

SERGINHO, left full-back, from AC MILAN to FLAMENGO or VASCO.

ALEX, play-maker, from PARMA to either FLAMENGO or VASCO, but dozens of
European teams are also chasing him, in particular DEPORTIVO LA CORUNA.

PEREIRA, midfielder, former Sao Paulo, Colo-Colo, Perugia, from Colo-Colo to
Corinthians -> substitute for Vampeta : what a decadence!! (Pereira was the
captain of the Brazilian U-20 team who won the WC-U20 in Australia in 1993.
However, he could never find a space at Sao Paulo and was dumped at an early
age at Colo-Colo where he became an idol in the weak Chilean league.)

EDU SCHMIDT, forward, from SAO PAULO to CELTA VIGO for 5 million dollars.
Benny reported that Corinthians' Edu had signed with Celta. This Edu is another
one, with a (fake?real?) German passport, instead of a fake Portuguese
passport.

Note : I bet there may be Schmidt living in Brazil than in Germany.

Irineu

Zenden To Fiorentina?

It now appears that Boudewijn Zenden will join Fiorentina and not Lazio or
Chelsea as previously thought. The Dutch winger is out for a month with injury.

Popescu Retires

32 year old Galatasaray defender Gheorghe Popescu has announced his
retirement from the Romanian national team.

27 AUGUST 2000

Another Blow For Aussies

Professional cripple Paul Okon is out of Australia's Olympic squad after breaking
his foot during Boro's match against Leeds on Saturday. The Aussies are already
without playmaker Harry Kewell.

26 AUGUST 2000

Boro Agree Fee For Macca

Middlesbrough have agreed a fee with Real Madrid for winger Steve 'Macca'
McManaman. The player has stated in the past he will not return to the
Premiership but lack of interest from other European clubs may force him
to change his stance.

ROUND UP by Tim Leidecker

Injuries

Kaiserslautern defender Michael Schjĝnberg suffered a torn ACL when crashing
hard into the post during the game against Wolfsburg. He is expected to be out
for six months.

Generous UEFA

European Football's governing body UEFA has donated close to £20 million from
money earned in the Champions League to the 51 UEFA members. The money
is only to be spent on youth support though. Germany received most of the cake
with £2.8 million followed by Italy (£2.3 million), France (£2.1 million), England
(£2 million) and Spain (£1.9 million).

Protest

Hundreds of fans protested in front of Corinthian's club territory on Tuesday over
the selling of midfield ace Vampeta to Inter. President Carlos Nujud had to
promise the fans to reinvest the £10 million earned on new players.

Coach Oswaldo Alvarez expressed his disappointment as well : "Vampeta is an
absolute World Class player. There are only 5-6 players in the whole world who
can replace him."

New Betting Scandal In Italy ?

After suspiciously many people had predicted a 1-1 draw in the Cup Tie between
Atalanta and Pistoiese Italian betting agency "Snai" alarmed the Italian FA which
is now investigating the situation.

The players are denying everything : "The betting agencies want people to play
but are afraid that they will bet too much on it." Pistoiese captain Andrea Bellini
explained.

Real Has To Pay Off Debts

The Spanish FA has demanded Real Madrid to pay off at least £35 million of their
record £165 million debts. Because of that club president Florentino Perez now
wants to sell Real's training ground "Ciudad deportiva" which is valued at £218
million to the city of Madrid.

This way the record EC winners' would immediately be cleared of all their debts.
A new training ground would cost the building contractor Perez "only" £25 million
which would mean that there would be even some money left to spend on new
players.

While Real Madrid supporters will of course anxiously await the deal with the
community to go through the rest of Europe's football fans should cross their
fingers that it falls through - otherwise the stranglehold Real Madrid had on
European football for the past three seasons might become even tighter.

Abel Xavier Goes Before Court

After the bans of fellow Portuguese internationals Nuno Gomes and Paulo
Bento had been reduced by a month but his protest wasn't taken into
consideration, Everton fullback Abel Xavier has now contacted the European
Sports Court Of Justice 'CAS'.

His Belgian defender Jean-Louis Dupont claims that further investigation has
come to the result that Abel Xavier did indeed not punch or spit at the referee
in the EURO 2000 game against France.

Additionally he claims that it is "unbearable that his club gets punished for an
offence done in the national team as well" as Abel Xavier has also been
suspended from playing in the UEFA Cup. Expect UEFA to lighten the
punishment on him as well.

Bosman On Transfer Fees

"No human being is worth all these millions. This is financial abuse which in
my opinion does not make any sense. UEFA and FIFA will have to develop a
new transfer system which respects and pays attention to the existing rules
of competition [within the EU]".

Wenger Banned For 12 Games Maybe

Arsenal's French coach has been accused of lashing out on a referee following
the Gunners' 0-1 loss at Sunderland where his countryman Patrick Vieira had
been sent off for elbowing his opponent Darren Williams in the 90th minute.

Two days later Wenger again had to leave the pitch early during the match
against Liverpool. This may be enough for the English FA to ban him for up to
12 games. Since Wenger took over in October 1996 Arsenal has become the
most undisciplined team in the league with 31 red cards.

German U-18 National Team Will Enter League Play

As a preparation for the Under 18 World Cup in Argentina the German U-18
national team will play seven games in the Regionalliga Nord (3rd division)
starting in February 2001.

Coach Uli Stielike is very pleased that his proposal was accepted : "The players
will be able to play on a regular basis together which will help the team gel for
the World Cup tournament."

1999-2000 UEFA Champions League Awards

Best Goalkeeper : Oliver Kahn, Bayern München
Best Striker : Raúl, Real Madrid
Best Player : Fernando Redondo, Real Madrid, now at Milan

23 AUGUST 2000

The Referees A W******

Graham Poll has defended his decision to send off Gary McAllister and Patrick
Viera but admits he was wrong to send off Dietmar Hamann - "I have studied
the video and am completely satisfied that the action taken was absolutely
correct."

The introduction of professional referees will change nothing. Good eyesight
and common sense are qualities we are born with, they cannot be taught.

Bologna Sign Cruz

Bologna have signed Argentinean striker Julio Cruz from Feyenoord.
Thanks to Vova Belmasov for the news.

Ferguson Blasts Refs

"Some of these referees nowadays are absolute prima donnas. They make
problems for themselves."
Alex Ferguson

22 AUGUST 2000

Not much in terms of news today. In the mean-time take a look through the
Premiership club histories pages and if you can fill in the blanks contact me
with the details.

Adams To Open Clinic

Arsenal captain Tony Adams will open a clinic to help players addicted
to alcohol, drugs and gambling. Adams is a reformed alcoholic himself having
given up drinking four years ago.

South Africa Announce New Coach

Carlos Queiroz, who coached Portugal between 1991 - 1993, is the new coach
of South Africa.

21 AUGUST 2000

More Problems For UEFA

Spanish telecommunications company, Telefonica, have set aside over £300
million to sponsor a European Superleague. Bayern Munich vice president
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said the club received an offer double that of their
current Champions League income.

20 AUGUST 2000

Ronaldo To Return In 2001-2002 Season?

Ronaldo is expected to be fit to return to action in January but the surgeon
who operated on his knee, Gerard Saillant, suggested that Inter give the
striker the whole of this season to recover (because of pressure not because
of any problems with his knee) after visiting Ronaldo in Rio de Janeiro.

Ferguson To Coach Kids? Nistelrooij Update

Alex Ferguson has been offered the role of head of youth development at
Man United when his contract runs out at the end of next season.

Ferguson has invited Ruud Van Nistelrooij to train at Old Trafford in
October suggesting once the player proves his fitness his transfer will be
resurrected.

Berger Out

Liverpool midfielder Patrick Berger will be out for two months with a knee
ligament injury. Liverpool have already lost Robbie Fowler and Jamie
Redknapp with long term injuries.

19 AUGUST 2000

Disaster For Roma

Roma midfielder Emerson could be out for six months with a knee ligament
injury sustained in training.

Rangers Still Looking For A Striker

Rangers have made a bid a very generous £9 million bid for Filippo Maniero.
The former Parma and Milan striker, now at Venezia, has one year left on
his current contract.

Misha

Just in case there is any confusion over yesterday's Bundesliga transfer,
it was Misha Djorkaeff, Youri's younger brother, who signed for
Kaiserslautern.

Redondo Wins Award

Fernando Redondo has been voted the Champions League player of the year.
Coaches of the forty two competitors in last season's competition voted.

Wishful Thinking

Frank Lebouef has threatened to quit the French national team if he doesn't
get a first team place when Laurent Blanc retires next month.

FA Cup Bonus

The winners of this seasons FA Cup will received a bonus of £1 million.

18 AUGUST 2000

Blackburn Rovers Chairman Passes Away

Blackburn Rovers Chairman, Jack Walker, has died aged 70. The multi
millionaire ploughed money into the club in the early 90's to turn them from
division one strugglers to Premiership Champions in 1995.

£10 Million For O'Leary

Leeds coach David O'Leary will sign a six year contract with the club before
tomorrow's match with Everton. The deal will earn O'Leary £10 million
over 6 seasons making him the highest paid coach in England.

Perugia Case Settled, Sort Of

The 'Perugia' case has been settled out of court however the European Union
still insist changes need to be made to the transfer system. I could be wrong
but I think Belgian club Charleroi are still taking the case to court.

ROUND UP by Tim Leidecker

Banned

Hertha's Brazilian striker Alex Alves has been banned for six weeks dating
back to July 24th for lashing out on Hamburg's Nico Kovac in the League Cup
Semi-final.

Attempted Murder On David Beckham

When David Beckham got into his Ferrari 550 Maranello on Monday morning
he immediately recognized "a strange feeling when braking". A Ferrari
mechanic later detected that the brake tubes had been severed.

What happened ? The culprit managed to get onto Beckham's estate at night
as the alarm system wasn't working and had all the time in the world to
manipulate the brakes.

The outcome could have been deadly for the Man United winger as the brakes
didn't have any power left, a Ferrari expert explained.

Del Piero to Barça?

Even though Barça president Joan Gaspart claimed that the teams' roster is
complete after the signing of Alfonso it is understood that he is still looking
for another high profile signing. After Juventus announced that Zidane is not
for sale Gaspart who says that "only the world's best players should play for
Barça" has turned his attention to Alessandro Del Piero.

Rumors have it that the Barça boss has even made a £40 million bid for
the Italian playmaker. A move away from the "Vecchia Signora" does not
seem impossible at this time as Del Piero had just recently been heavily
(but unjustifiedly as far as Juve concerns) criticised by the Agnelli family,
owners of Juve.

Insured

The most expensive football player in the world, Luis Figo, has now also
been insured with a record sum : An English insurance company would have
to pay £40 million to Real Madrid should the Portuguese ace have to end
his career prematurely.

Another Big Signing

Bayer Leverkusen want to make another splash on the transfer market before
the transfer list closes in Germany on January 15th. Coach Christoph Daum
explained : "We're going to bring in another top performer who fits our
concept."

Expect them to sign either a midfielder or a top quality striker either from
South America or Eastern Europe. Leverkusen are reportedly also after Barça's
French defender Frederic Dehu who is also sought after by PSG and "two
English clubs" according to Barça general director Anton Perera.

Bonus

Energie Cottbus players who take part in at least 25 matches for at least 45
minutes will receive a bonus of £30,000 if the club manages to stay in the
Bundesliga.

Werder's Interest In Salou

Werder Bremen sports director Klaus Allofs has expressed his club's interest in
Frankfurt's tree-long Togolese striker Bachirou Salou who is currently out of
favour with coach Felix Magath.

I think this is only a move to put some pressure on St. Pauli which Werder is
still struggling with for striker Ivan Klasnic. Pauli has demanded DM 2,5
million which is far more than Werder wants to spend on the Croatian U-20
international who can leave the Hamburg's area club for free at the end of
the season.

Betis On Strike

The players of Spanish Segunda Division side Real Betis are on strike since
last Friday because of outstanding salaries. Betis captain Juan Merino explains
that club president Manuel Lopera still owes the majority of players money
from within the last two years. Should the debts not be paid until the end of
the month Betis will not take the pitch when the Segunda Division kicks off
September 3rd.

Leeds Players Before Court

Defender Jonathan Woodgate, midfielder Lee Bowyer and reserve striker
Tony Hackworth have been accused of grievous bodily harm on 19-year-old
Asian student Sarfraz Najeib. Woodgate and fellow Leeds defender Michael
Duberry will also have to answer for false testimony. Until the trial
starts on September 25th the players are free on bail.

Lazio And Roma Struggle For Olympico

A struggle between Lazio and Roma for the Roman Olympic Stadium lies
ahead.

The stadium, once built by Musso in the 1930s and lastly renovated in 1990
for the World Cup, is still owed by the state but is going to be sold to flush
some money into the public treasury.

Both clubs who are also floating on the Milan stock market are greatly
interested in the stadium to increase their capital stock.

Eight To Go

The ageless Pietro Vierchowod, currently under contract with (now) Serie B
club Piacenza is only eight games shy of the all-time Serie A appearance
record still held by Dino Zoff (570).

Because of that he is looking for a club to stay in 'A'. Perugia, Atalanta and
Venezia have allegedly already shown interest in signing the 41-year-old
defender.

Napoli Retire #10

Napoli have retired the n°10 jersey made famous by the great little Diego
Armando Maradona which means that no player will ever get to wear the
"playmaker shirt" at the South Italian club again.

The only other jersey that has been retired in European Football as far as
I know is #6 at Milan worn with pride for 20 years by "Il Capitano" grande,
Franco Baresi.

Baía For Free

Portuguese international flypaper Vítor Baía has been released out of his
contract which still had three years on it by FC Barcelona. Baía thus is available
on a free transfer but it is expected that he will return to his home club
FC Porto where he also was on loan in the past season.

Wenger Criticises English Clubs' Transfer Policy

"If you buy a man who is half-dead the people outside the pitch might enjoy
that but on the playing field you get a lot of problems. I prefer bringing in
unknown players and leading them to higher levels.

When Emmanuel Petit came here to London nobody knew him and when we
bought Marc Overmars he had been on the market for five months. Both
became World Class players at Arsenal.

[On Boksic => Boro, Ginola => Villa, Weah => City] In my opinion these kind
of deals happen because of politics but not for football reasons. This
phenomenon can be followed Europe-wide. This is a regrettable and alarming
trend."

Cecchi Gori Wants To Invest

Fiorentina has made a £10 million bid for Glasgow Rangers midfielder Giovanni
van Bronckhorst. The Viola has also expressed their interest in Barça winger
Boudewijn Zenden after his transfer to Lazio hit a snag.

The UEFA Cup participants' unexpected spending activity was initiated by
president Vittorio Cecchi Gori selling his two TV channels Telemontecarlo 1
and 2 to Telecom Italia subsidiary Seat-Tin-It for £250 million.

Deschamps Continues With Les Bleus

31-year-old midfielder Didier Deschamps has decided to continue his career
with the French national team despite Michel Platini's advise to retire. He will
now continue to occupy a spot in midfield as he is the team's captain (and the
captain cannot be benched) thus blocking the career of promising French
prospects Vieira, Dalmat or Luccin on the national team.

Assistants

Erich Rutemöller has been appointed assistant coach for the German National
Team. Ruud Krol will be the "right hand" for Louis Van Gaal and Oranje in the
future.

Desperate Red & Black Transfer Movements

After Silvio Berlusconi had a £11 million bid for Real Madrid midfielder Guti,
who impressed the Rossoneri president a LOT during the centennial
celebration match, turned down Milan are now focussing on English winger
Steve McManaman who is out-of-favour with coach Vincente Del Bosque.

Additionally Milan appear to have renewed it's interest in Bayer Leverkusen
defender Jens Nowotny whom Milan had already made a £8 million bid for
two years ago.

Nowotny, one of the cornerstones of the new German National Team and
seen by many as one of the Top 3 defenders in the game today (Nesta,
Stam) has risen in value to around £15 million in the meantime. Milan are
desperately looking for another defender after failing to bring in Antonio Carlos
(Roma) or Martin Djetou (Monaco).

Finally the chances of Argentine playmaker Riquelme arriving at Milan sooner
than expected (Milan planned to have him at the end of the "Apertura"
championship which equals the European winter break) have risen dramatically
as Milan has cut a non-UEFA player in Taribo West from the roster and are
prepared to pay £13 million for the Boca star.

Ziege's Letter

German international Christian Ziege has written an open letter to his EURO
2000 teammates proposing to donate the millions earned by the players
through sponsorships, despite their awful performances, to the DFB to help
supporting young talents.

Sucking Up

"Sebastian is the most perfect player Germany has. He is quick, has pace, can
jump like a kangaroo, shoots equally well with both feet and has an awesome
shooting technique overall."
Hertha coach Jürgen Röber on Sebastian Deisler

"Phantastic ! Since the days of Paulo Roberto Falcao [Roma legend from the
80s - Tim] I have not seen such a midfielder. He gives the team the right
balance. He will be of fundamental importance for us."
Francesco Totti on his new teammate Émerson

HSV Players Can Cash In

Should they manage to advance past Danish vice-champions Brĝndby and thus
qualify for the First Stage of the Champions League Hamburg's team has been
promised a bonus of £1 million.

Adidas Sponsoring The Champions League

Starting this season "adidas" will provide the official equipment for UEFA
Champions League games i.e. balls and shirts for the referees. In exchange
the sports company will receive innovative internet marketing rights as well
as preferred placement for board and TV ads.

Overmars Mobbed Out Of Highbury

After Dutch international winger Marc Overmars transferred from Arsenal
to Barcelona two weeks ago the "dirty details" are now becoming public:
According to former Gunners attacker Alan Smith who is still very close
to the club Overmars made his decision to leave after being blasted by a
teammate in the locker room. After the 2-3 against Coventry an "unnamed
older player" (Tony Adams ?) accused Overmars of "having played as with
a high jumping stick stuck up his arse"...

L'Equipe Turnover Top 5 For 1999/2000

1. Man United £85 million
2. Bayern München £80 million
3. Real Madrid £69 million
4. Barcelona £67 million
5. Juventus £56 million

17 AUGUST 2000

Perugia Case Verdict Next Year

I realise we have been reporting this for close to two months but the
significance of this story cannot be overstated.

A ruling in what has been dubbed 'The Perugia' case is expected early next
year. Italian club Perugia and Belgian club Charleroi have 'signed' players
under contract but FIFA have refused to sanction the transfers as no fees have
been paid. The clubs state the transfer system is in breech of European
law, several European Union spokespersons have already backed that
claim.

With a ruling in favour of Perugia and Charleroi almost inevitable in future
clubs wishing to sign players 'under contract' will simply pay the remainder
of a players wages. The 'big clubs' will probably sign players to huge
contracts similar to those earnt by the top stars in US sports thus making
it difficult for rivals to buy out the contracts. The first £50 million contract
cannot be far away. I expect next season I will no longer list tranfer fees
but contract details!

The sudden drop in tranfer activity could be as a result of clubs taking a
cautious approach ahead of the Perugia case. Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger
has already hinted as such.

Matteo Move Hits Snag

Domonic Matteo failed his medical at Leeds United. Leeds will go ahead with
the transfer however but will not pay Liverpool the fee until he makes a full
recovery, estimated to be between 6-8 weeks.

Badge For Champs

Real Madrid, Milan and Bayern Munich will wear a special badge on their
shirts in this season's Champions League. The badge shows the European Cup
on a blue background and can only be worn by teams who have won the
European Cup five times (Real Madrid 8, Milan 5) or three time consecutively
(Bayern Munich). The only other team to meet this criteria are Ajax who won
three consecutive European Cups in the early 70's.

16 AUGUST 2000

Alfonso - I Want Maldini On His Arse!

Alfonso, FC Barcelona's new signing, remembered Paolo Maldini when he was
asked by a reporter what he wanted to do before he retired from football. The
Spaniard said: "I would like to leave Maldini in his arse with one of my
"regates" (Spanish for fancy dribbling)."
By Julio César

Derby Sign Ref!

Derby have 'signed' Kevin Lynch, a retired referee, to help them with
their habit of collecting cards. The clubs had the worst disciplinary record
in the Premiership - 100 yellow cards and 4 reds.

Coventry Sign Bellamy

Coventry have signed forward Craig Bellamy from Norwich for £6 million.
Is it any wonder there are so many foreigners in the Premiership when
players in the first division cost so much?

Zidane - Ridiculous Transfers

"When I hear in my own case people talk about £46-60 million (transfer fee)
I find this ridiculous."
Zinedine Zidane admits he's over-rated to French Magazine L'Equipe

Lebouef - Vialli Has Problems

"Vialli has problems with everybody, with Albert Ferrer and many others.
It's normal for a coach to get along with his lads, but not him."
Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf
