THE ROUND OF THRASHINGS
13 OCTOBER 2001
HAMBURG 4-0 HERTHA
Barbarez 37
Ketelaer 41, 46
Benjamin 58
Preetz missed an absolute sitter from Deisler's centre, then Hamburg took
the lead through who else but Barbarez who slammed home Holler's cross,
goal shouldn't have counted as Meijer was miles offside though.
Ketelaer shook off his month-long jinx with 2 beautiful goals, he took Van Burik
for a ride before rifling under Király for the first and put away Meijer's header
across goal for the second. Speedy winger Benjamin completed the rout with
a left-footed stroke into the bottom-right corner off Barbarez' header.
New HSV coach Jara recorded the highest victory ever for a newly appointed
manager of the Hamburg club while Jürgen Röber better win the next couple
of games or he'll have to look for a new job!
Assists: Hollerbach (x2), Meijer, Barbarez
Attendance: 43,129
STUTTGART 3-0 SCHALKE
Bordon 35
Ganea 52
Hleb 54
This was a rematch for the game which lost Schalke the "Meisterschaft" last
season. Bordon headed in Seitz' free kick watched by Wimbledon winner
Goran Ivanisevic who was in the stands. Reck gifted the home side the 2-0
shortly after the break with an unspeakable yet characteristic stupidity :
Instead of sending Waldoch's back pass into the stands he tried to dribble
Ganea, the Rumanian wouldn't have it, stole the ball off him and with vision
fired past Waldoch who was on the goalline. Hleb pounced onto Waldoch's
hospital pass, raced clear of the Schalke defense and rounded Reck before
tapping into an empty net for his 1st ever Bundesliga goal!
The VfB quite surprisingly is a force again at home, unbeaten in the last 8
games now.
Assist: Seitz
Attendance: 34,000
MÖNCHENGLADBACH 1-2 DORTMUND
Demo 78 (Pen) Ricken 13
Ewerthon 23
Gladbach vs Dortmund -- The Battle Of The Borussia's! Lars Ricken, despite
playing with a nastily looking bump, connected with Ewerthon's outstanding
through pass to mark the 0-1. After Rosický-Amoroso, this could be the 2nd
yellow-black "dream team" in the making... Ricken had to be substituted with
doublevision, sustained in a rough collision with Hausweiler, after the goal.
Stevic came on in his place.
Ewerthon made it 0-2 with an easy finish courtesy of Amoroso's through pass.
Ewerthon's Bundesliga balance so far : 2 games, 2 goals, 2 assists. Impressive!
Rosický (!) was sent off for his 2nd bookable offence, Lehmann had to leave as
well (sprained thumb), Laux replaced him in the nets. Mieciel struck the post at
the end of the 1st half.
Former Babelsberg ace Marco Küntzel was elbowed in the box by Dedę, Demo
converted the penalty. Gladbach should have been awarded another spot kick
after a Dedę handball but for some odd reason the ref's whistle remained silent.
Assists: Ewerthon, Amoroso, Küntzel
Red Card: Rosický 38 (Dortmund)
Attendance: 34,500 (sold out)
COTTBUS 2-3 LEVERKUSEN
Helbig 12 Kirsten 4, 57 (Pen)
Sebők 52 Ballack 43
Schneider headed Ballack's cross back across goal and the tireless Kirsten notched
his 5th of the season with a diving header. Bayer reject Helbig equalized with a
tap-in from Reghecampf's centre. Sebescen got himself sent off for a stupid foul
on Kobylanski, his 2nd bookable offence => Bayer down to 10 men for 70
minutes!
Ballack headed in his 5th of the season as well, supplier once again Bernd
Schneider who is in the shape of his life and ready to rock. Rudi Völler! Sebők
headed Energie level from Miriuta's corner. Placente won a very soft penalty
and Kirsten won the game from the spot.
Leverkusen undefeated in their last 15 games, wow!
Assists: Schneider (x2), Reghecampf, Miriuta, Placente
Red Card: Sebescen 18 (Leverkusen)
Attendance: 16,460
FREIBURG 2-2 ST. PAULI
Kobiashvili 40 (Pen) Marçăo 14
Iashvili 74 Konetzke 81
New signing Marçăo headed in his 1st Bundesliga goal from Rahn's cross.
I wonder if there still are teams which don't have "atacantes do Brasil"
these days... :) Germany's biggest diving twat/most clever player Andreas
Zeyer won another penalty, Kobiashvili sovereignly equalized from the spot.
In the 2nd half Sellimi headed a "Wembley Goal" i.e. the ball did not cross the
line, then his strike partner Iashvili scored a beautiful goal from countryman
Tskitishvili's through pass. The bald headed Konetzke rescued Pauli a point
following confuse billiard in Freiburg's area.
Assists: Rahn, Zeyer, Tskitishvili, Trulsen
Attendance: 25,000 (sold out)
1860 MÜNCHEN 1-5 BAYERN MÜNCHEN
Bierofka 9 Santa Cruz 28
Fink 44
Salihamidzic 57
Élber 80
Pizarro 86 (Pen)
In the 194th Derby Of Munich the only trueborn "Münch'ner" on the pitch opened
the scoring: Daniel Bierofka beat Kahn with a beautiful stroke from the left wing,
Bayern's first Bundesliga goal against after 480 minutes! Greilich, once again
starting a game for the Blues after what must have been *years* of recovery
from a knee injury, produced a terrible candle in his own box (!), Élber punished
him dealry by setting up Santa Cruz for the equalizer. Fink buried a shot under
Jentzsch to give Bayern the lead at half time.
Brazzo added another one after the break from Hargreaves' cross, then the white
hot Élber scored his 8th goal in his last 4 games (Bundesliga and Champions
League) after a brilliant free kick trick involving Lizarazu (sporting a new,
hard-to-get-used-to 5mm hair cut), Fink and Paulo Sergio. Substitute Pizarro won
himself a penalty and converted himself for the highest Derby victory in over
20 years!
The arrival of Pizarro as well as the emergence of Santa Cruz as competent
starter have really spurred on to the performances of Giovane Élber, who at
age 29 is playing the best football of his career and who has finally established
himself as one of the very best strikers in Europe.
Assists: Borimirov, Élber, Hargreaves (x2), Paulo Sergio, Pizarro
Attendance: 69,000 (sold out)
KAISERSLAUTERN 3-1 ROSTOCK
Grammozis 46 Beierle 37
Lokvenc 48
Ramzy 77
Beierle headed in Jakobsson's heavily deflected shot to give Hansa a surprise
lead. Lautern came out of the locker room smoking in the 2nd half: Grammozis
clobbered Rydlewicz and Jakobsson before drilling a powerful shot past Schober
from just outside the area. Great, great goal, his 1st ever for 'Lautern! Lokvenc
poked in Grammozis' through pass to turn the game around and Ramzy made
sure the points stayed at home with a scoop shot into the top-right angle.
Next week : Top of the table clash, 'Lautern at Bayern, we'll see what they're
made of then...
Assists: Lincoln (x2), Grammozis
Attendance: 39,387
14 OCTOBER 2001
KÖLN 0-4 WOLFSBURG
Petrov 2, 50 (Pen)
Róbson Ponté 6
Karhan 61
Akonnor whacked the ball down the pitch, Róbson Ponté surprisinly let the ball
run through to Petrov who used his enormous pace to leave his marker Bulajic
behind and rounded Bade before tapping into an empty net. Róbson Ponté
chested down Müller's deflected shot/through pass while running across goal
and in one smooth motion buried the ball under Bade for the 2-0.
Munteanu cracked a free kick against the woodwork. Rau, who looks like a
10-years younger version of former Wolves' fan favourite Präger, won a penalty,
Petrov converted for his 2nd Bundesliga goal. Karhan made it 4-0 on the counter
attack following a surging run down the right flank and a whack across goal.
Wolfsburg turned around 1080° after their wretched start but boy, does Köln
suck right now!
Assists: Akonnor, Müller, Rau, Petrov
Attendance: 29,000
BREMEN 3-0 NÜRNBERG
Lisztes 4, 56
Ernst 90
Lisztes scrambled in Skripnik's fine cross to give Werder the early lead. Gomis
had a perfectly regular equalizer disallowed for offside, an example for the
rotten luck the Club has had this season so far. Werder's Hungarian playmaker
who seems to have won the battle over reign in midfield against his Austrian
counterpart Herzog and young Croat Banovic for now also scored the 2-0 with
a what looked like stoppable 22m shot.
Substitutes Klasnic and Ernst hooked up on the counter attack to put the game
out of reach. The Green-White's from the Weser have now won 3 in a row and
the fact that Andi Herzog who has almost legendary status in Bremen or Fabian
Ernst, the captain of the German U-21 side cannot find a place in the starting
says something about the depth of this Werder team.
Assists: Skripnik (x2), Klasnic
Attendance: 26,650
