KAISERSLAUTERN SENT BORUSSIA CRASHING OUT OF THE TITLE RACE

All match reviews by Tim Leidecker tim@milanmania.com unless otherwise
stated.

14 APRIL 2002

KAISERSLAUTERN 1-0 DORTMUND
Pettersson 48

Dortmund were lucky not to give up a penalty when Metzelder fell into
Klose in the box. Amoroso sent a huge diving header just over the bar
in the 38th minute. 10 minutes later Borussia turned the ball over in
midfield and Kaiserslautern hit them on the counterattack: Wörns weakly
headed out Basler's cross, Pettersson pounced onto the ball and swept
it past Laux for the lone goal of the evening.

Attendance: 40,600 (sold out)

STUTTGART 0-0 COTTBUS

Hildebrand, back in the nets after injury, made a fine save from a
trademark Miriuta free kick. Soldo blazed just over the bar on a 48th
minute counter attack. Fernando Meira headed a free kick against the
crossbar.

Cottbus are now also mathematically free from relegation worries.

Attendance: 18,000

13 APRIL 2002

HAMBURG 1-1 LEVERKUSEN
Barbarez 5 Neuville 13

Hamburg went ahead on the Liverpool-conquerors with an early goal,
ironically it was Erik Meijer who has played for both Leverkusen and the
Reds before joining the HSV who flicked onto a corner and last seasons'
top goalgetter Sergej Barbarez steered home his 7th of the season at the
far post.

Berbatov then set up Zé Roberto who is said to have signed for Bayern as
well (Ballack), "Zé" cruised into the box, centred and Oliver Neuville
blasted in the equalizer. It was already Zé Roberto's 16th (!) assist of
the season, Felipão - wake up!

Butt made a super save from Romeo from less than 5m out! Ramelow wasted
a great chance clear through on goal with two teammates wide open in the
middle. Butt made another two great saves from an Albertz free kick and
an Ujfaluši header to earn Leverkusen a hard-fought point.

Assists: Meijer, Zé Roberto
Attendance: 54,503

BREMEN 3-0 SCHALKE
Baumann 24
Aílton 64
Frings 77

After "desecrating" Schalke's new stadium "Arena" by being the first
and only Bundesliga team to win there (and not too shabby with 4-1)
in the first leg this season, Werder continued where they had left off
laying a siege on the visitor's goal with good chances through Ernst,
playing in his 100th Bundesliga game and Frings. Captain Frank Baumann
finally broke through powerfully heading in Aílton's corner. Werder
should have been awarded a penalty when Möller fouled Fabian Ernst just
inside the area in the 44th minute.

Young Croat Ivica Banovic, playing for suspended playmaker Lisztes,
found Aílton on the wing, he took a step into the middle and unleashed
a well-placed shot just into the far corner. It was already his 15th
goal this season, a nice hint to the critics who claimed he wasn't
worth shit without Pizarro... Substitute Hajto headed against the post
and then volleyed his own rebound against the crossbar and into the
goal "Wembley style", referee Wagner did not allow the goal to stand
though (possibly as compensation for missing the penalty call on Ernst).

Donkey Van Hoogdalem headed a routine longball straight into the path
of Torsten Frings and the "Lutscher" left his former teammate Olli Reck
no chance with a dry left-footed shot into the near corner. Werder's
defense duo of Baumann & Krstajic comfortably marked out the S04 "Dream
Attack" of Sand & Mpenza in this one. Additionally German international
winger Böhme was rendered almost completely ineffective by the engaged
play of Holger Wehlage.

Schalke is out of the title race (if they were ever in).

Assists: Aílton, Banovic
Attendance: 35,600 (sold out)

HERTHA 1-0 ROSTOCK
Alex Alves 2

Alex Alves was back from injury and most fans had not even taken their
seat (those in the "Kurve" of course not anyway) when he capitalized on
Beinlich's free kick at the far post, grave mistake by the Hansa defense
who put three (!) men on Preetz (!) leaving Double A wide open. Swedish
striker Magnus Arvidsson had three good chances for the visitors after
the break.

Hansa has lost 7 straight road games under Veh.

Assist: Beinlich
Attendance: 42,537

1860 MÜNCHEN 5-2 FREIBURG
Šuker 24 But 31
Riseth 28 Müller 66
Max 45, 89 (Pen)
Cerny 59

Šuker gave the home side the lead from a goalmouth scramble after good
work from Borimirov down the wing. Riseth added a second only 4 minutes
later heading in Häßler's corner. But pulled one back from what looked
like a savable free kick. Max dribbled two defenders and squeezed one
just inside the post seconds before the half time whistle.

More of the same after the break, Harald Cerny ferociously smashing
Šuker's fine cross just under the crossbar. Stefan Müller scored on his
3rd attempt, i.e. Jentzsch managed to save twice (!) after Coulibaly's
header deactivated the offside trap. Ramdane threw himself into Jentzsch
to win a penalty but the 'keeper saved But's weak spot kick!

The "Löwen" showed how it's done properly, Šuker threw himself over
Müller's legs and Max, who fortunately will have no chance of going to
Japan & Korea, boosted his goal tally to 16 for the season from the
penalty spot. Freiburg absolutely *has* to win their home game against
Kaiserslautern next week, otherwise they look doomed.

Assists: Häßler, Šuker (x3)
Attendance: 20,700

KÖLN 2-1 ST. PAULI
Lottner 8 Inceman 46
Scherz 90

Much sought-after Balitsch created a great opening with a soaring run
down the wing but both Kurth and Springer missed his cross in the
middle.
Cichon won a free kick which Lottner beautifully curled in for a rare FC
goal. Balitsch and Song had a huge double-chance following a corner.

Köln's finishing in the first half was pathetic and Pauli punished them
dearly for not going up 3, 4-0 on them when Nico Patschinski helped on a
header and Ugur Inceman celebrated his Bundesliga goal debut with a hard
shot from the right wing.

Song made an unbelievable double save against Kolinger and the follow-up
from Gibbs (from 5m!) on the line. Deep into injury time Kurth whacked a
shot against the post and ex St.-Paulianer Scherz bundled the rebound
over the line to give Köln full 3 points in an awesome relagation bowl!

Assists: Cichon, Patschinski
Attendance: 26,000

NÜRNBERG 1-2 BAYERN MÜNCHEN
Krzynówek 73 (Pen) Élber 12
						Pizarro 42

Bayern had not won in the Frankenstadion since 1991 (back then a 22-year
old Stefan Effenberg played his first season for the "Rekordmeister")...
The dethroned European Champions came out of the locker room smoking
with very aggressive pressing and a superior willingness to tackle and
run hard and it paid off almost immediately when teenage amateur Andreas
Wolf produced a candle from Effenberg's cross and Élber headed in the
1000th away goal in club history.

Kahn made a superb double save from Brasilians Cacãu and Rink. Kampa
made a tremendous save from a stunning first time Brazzo volley in what
was now a sizzling South Derby! Three minutes before the break Pizarro
put some icing over the efforts of the Club when he scored from a goal-
mouth scramble. Élber chipped a shot against the post on the counter
attack early in the second half.

Ref Krug then awarded Nürnberg a very flattering penalty when Rink took
a dive and Krzynówek left Kahn no chance from the spot. Kos was sent off
for his second bookable offence, a unnecessary foul on Hargreaves on the
wing. Sagnol saved Müller's shot on the line after Kahn came out as the
Bayern hold on for three vital points in the hunt for the 3rd spot.
Nürnberg however only have the even crapper opposition to thank that
they're not among the bottom three (yet).

Assists: Élber, Rink
Red Card: Kos 74 (Nürnberg)
Attendance: 44,696 (sold out)

MÖNCHENGLADBACH 0-2 WOLFSBURG
						Klimowicz 48, 60

Reitmaier, back in goal for the pathetic Ramovic, made a great save
from Van Lent's close range header. Ašanin flashed a 42nd minute free
kick just inches wide. 3 minutes into the 2nd half Sarpei sent Maier's
goal kick to Klimowicz on the wing, the huge Argie striker muscled his
way past the himself physically-impressive Ašanin before slotting past
the 'keeper. Diego Fernando Klimowicz added a 2nd (his 8th from the last
8 games!) towering over Hausweiler to head in after Reitmaier failed to
save Petrov's cracking shot.

Assist: Sarpei
Attendance: 26,900
