BUNDESLIGA ROUND 20

BAYERN HAND THE LEAD IN THE TABLE OVER TO ARCH-RIVALS DORTMUND

All match reviews by Tim Leidecker tim@milanmania.com unless
otherwise stated.

Dear Bundesliga followers,

I'm sorry for the heavy delay but the past two weeks have been the
"money time" of my first semester at the university and with 3 final
exams I just didn't get my nose out of the books... But now with 2
months of vacation coming up, I promise to deliver as fast and as
accurate as you've gotten used to in the past.

Thanks for your understanding,

Tim (your man in charge of the Bundesliga)

3 FEBRUARY 2002

ROSTOCK 1-0 ST. PAULI
Hirsch 82 (Pen)

Only one chance of note in the first half when Kovalenko ran over
Stanislawski to create a great opening for Di Salvo but the young
Italian missed the goal by inches! Game looked like a certain 0-0
until second idiotic US boy Corey Gibbs bowled over Arvidsson in
the box and Hirsch converted the penalty to give Hansa a maximum
6 points from the 2 games against their arch-rivals.

Assist: Arvidsson
Attendance: 18,600

BAYERN MÜNCHEN 2-0 LEVERKUSEN
Élber 67
Effenberg 71 (Pen)

Élber had a tremendous dribble solo starting on the wing capped off
with a hard shot to the near corner just parried by Butt. He then
flicked Hargreaves' long cross to Jancker who got himself rid of
Nowotny, turned and chipped the 'keeper but young man Kleine, making
his first career Bundesliga start in place of the injured Lúcio,
scratched the ball from the line. Zé Roberto had the first chance
for Bayer with a header from Ramelow's cross. Butt made a stunning
save from a ferocious Élber first-time strike.

A learned free kick trick gave Bayern the lead: Fink stopped the ball
for Effenberg, he fed it to the onrushing Linke (!) who at full pace
played a through pass to Élber and this time Giovane wasn't denied,
his shot across goal ended up in the net for the 1-0. Sagnol took a
tumble over Nowotny, ref Fandel dreamt up a penalty, Effenberg stepped
up and coolly buried his 1st goal of the season to knock Leverkusen
from the top of the table.

When the pressure is on, Bayern is at its very best.

Assists: Linke, Sagnol
Attendance: 43,000

2 FEBRUARY 2002

KÖLN 0-1 KAISERSLAUTERN
						Klose 57

Youth team coach Christoph John replaced Ewald Lienen in charge of the
Eff Zeh before this game. Klose shocked the Cologne faithful when he
powerfully headed in Lincoln's free kick 12 minutes into the 2nd half,
his 1st road goal of the season, 8th overall. Laslandes hit a huge
volley just over the bar. The useless French forward later missed an
absolute sitter all alone in front of goal after the ball favourably
broke to him.

Assist: Lincoln
Attendance: 27,000

NÜRNBERG 2-0 COTTBUS
Rink 60
Krzynówek 87 (Pen)

Kampa made two excellent saves 1-on-1 with Topic early on. Thielemann
broke Wiblishauser's shin- *and* calfbone with a nasty tackle and
somehow managed to escape with a yellow card! Get well soon, Frank...
Rink finally volleyed home his 1st goal for the Club after most
excellent work from Cacão down the wing. Jarolim took a dive over
Piplica, the ref blew his whistle and Krzynówek scored from the spot
for the 2-0 final result. Energie teammates Kobylanski and Topic were
so frustrated, they even got into a little brawl on the pitch (anyone
remember Blackburn in the Champions League...)!

Assists: Cacão, Jarolim
Attendance: 20,000

SCHALKE 2-0 MÖNCHENGLADBACH
Wilmots 1
Asamoah 90

Wilmots opened the scoring after 49 seconds following an raid-like
counter attack via Mpenza & Sand. Reck made a huge save from Van Lent's
bullet header. Asamoah won the ball deep in midfield and made the game
safe with a 90th minute solo.

Assist: Sand
Attendance: 60,683 (sold out)

HAMBURG 2-1 1860 MÜNCHEN
Präger 60 Weissenberger 89
Romeo 81

Romeo was allegedly fouled in the box by Votava but Barbarez smashed
the penalty against the crossbar. Cerny's candle just in front of the
goal (!) took out 'keeper Jentzsch, Barbarez gained control of the ball,
centred and Präger appeared to put away the 1-0. Romeo fantastically
created some space for himself in the box, killed Barbarez' centre and
swept the ball past Jentzsch with a left-footed drive. Weissenberger
nicely pulled one back from Häßler's through pass.

Assists: Barbarez (x2), Häßler
Attendance: 34,026

HERTHA 1-1 FREIBURG
Alex Alves 57 Iashvili 37

Golz made an excellent save from Beinlich's running header. Iashvili
headed in Willi's cross on the breakaway. Alex Alves scored a mighty
equalizer with a deflected shot from 25 meters!

Assists: Willi, Maas
Attendance: 25,146

BREMEN 1-2 STUTTGART
Bode 40 Ganea 62
						Tiffert 84

Rost had a good parade in the 21st minute against Stuttgart's pacey
left winger Seitz who had zero trouble abusing Frank "turtles are
sports cars compared with me" Verlaat. Tjikuzu had a good opportunity
after swapping passes with Aílton but Hildebrand was equal to his
finish. Baumann picked out Lisztes with a superb 50m pass, Werder's
Hungarian playmaker closed in on goal before centring for Bode who
had a field day tapping in his 100th Bundesliga goal!

Wenzel ran away from Ernst on the wing, whipped in a precise cross,
Verlaat headed fresh air so Ganea was wide open to nod in the 1-1.
If that wasn't enough Seitz clobbered two green-white players on the
wing, cut into the box, first hit Baumann's hand, then forced Rost
into a great save but teenage striker Tiffert was there to bang in the
rebound for the not undeserved game-winner.

Assists: Lisztes, Wenzel
Attendance: 26,000

WOLFSBURG 1-1 DORTMUND
Maric 36 (Pen) Heinrich 3

Heinrich swung in a routine cross from midfield, Koller ran through
the box confusing Reitmaier so the ball went into the far corner to
give Dortmund the early lead. Maric headed Petrov's free kick against
the post. Evanílson turned the ball over on the edge of the area,
Munteanu penetrated inside, the Brasilian fouled him, penalty, Maric
took care of business from the spot, 1-1. Lehmann made a string of
good saves against Maric, Weiser and Klimowicz to save Dortmund an
undeserved point.

Assists: Ewerthon, Munteanu
Attendance: 17,226
