A BLACK WEEKEND FOR MÜNCHEN AS THE RUHRPOTT CELEBRATES
A powerful, offensive BVB manages to break down the tactical walls of
Freiburg. Werder had to mount an impressive comeback to avoid defeat
at home to Leverkusen. Köln wins the first duel of the newly promoted
teams against Bochum.
New FCK coach Andy Brehme enjoys a most successful start into his
coaching career as his Red Devils hand the Löwen a historic defeat.
Schalke puts four past Frankfurt. Cottbus put on a rock solid
defensive performance to hold off tame Bayern.
Hamburg keeps on scoring, conceding, drawing -- this time in Stuttgart.
Former Hansa stars Beinlich & Rehmer inspire Hertha to win the East
Derby against Rostock. Unterhaching's Bundesliga fairytale seems to
come to an end as Wolfsburg stormes the (former) fortress Sportpark.
13 OCTOBER 2000
DORTMUND 1-0 FREIBURG
Heinrich 83
Dortmund bombarded the Freiburg goal from the very first minute and
already had promising chances in the first half which Bobic and Reina
pathetically blew though. Zeyer has to give the visitors the lead but
he carelessly wasted a 100% chance 1-on-1 with Lehmann.
So it came like it had to, Freiburg was more and more unable to escape
Borussia's pressure, thus Reina first struck the post and then the
multifunctional Heinrich gave the yellow-blacks full three points from
a goalmouth scramble 7 minutes from time. [TL]

14 OCTOBER 2000
BREMEN 3-3 LEVERKUSEN
Baumann 70 Neuville 20, 55
Bode 88 Ballack 81 (Pen)
Aílton 90 (Pen)
Rost gifted Neuville a hair-raising goal when he allowed "Little Olli"
to lob Ballack's cross into the empty net by moving out of his way (he
must have thought that the defenders would get the ball, there's no
other explanation for this strange goal). Aílton wide-openly blazed
Verlaat's lob over the bar at the other end.
Rost then made a fantastic save from Ballack's 30 meter free kick
hammer. Kirsten clobbered the slow, unsafe Verlaat and sent an overhead
cross to Neuville who nodded his 2nd of the afternoon into the roof.
Surprisingly Werder didn't give up and kept on trying and they were
rewarded when Baumann killed Ernst's attempted shot and poked the ball
over the line.
Bode gifted Leverkusen a penalty with a horrendous hospital pass to
Rost which left the 'keeper with no other option but to flatten the
substitute Brdaric; Ballack sent Rost the wrong way. Werder now still
showed great morale, they simply didn't want to give up the basically
lost game just yet. And the chances came :
Schneider cleared Bode's cross with his hand, penalty, but Zuberbühler
had 0 trouble with Herzog's tame spot kick. Bode made up for Herzerl's
mistake by powerfully heading in the following corner by Banovic.
Bayer's 'keeper then spoilt his very good performance by almost punching
Ernst unconciously when clear through on goal, red card for Zuberbühler
and another penalty which "Toni" Aílton coolly converted against right
back Zivkovic who was in goal because Bayer had already substituted 3
times.
Sensational comeback after an awful first half by Werder. [TL]
Red Card : Zuberbühler 90 (Leverkusen)
Attendance : 29,053
KÖLN 2-0 BOCHUM
Timm 82
Kurth 86
Schindzielorz came closest for the visitors when he smashed the ball
against the crossbar. 2nd generation defender Cullmann did the same
at the opposite end. When both teams already seemed to have settled
for the draw Lottner put through Timm with a great opening pass and
the U-21 international winger coolly finished the action to make it
1-0. Van Duijnhoven deflected another Timm shot against the crossbar,
Kurth added a 2nd with a turn-around blast into the top-left corner.

1860 MÜNCHEN 0-4 KAISERSLAUTERN
H Koch 14 (Pen)
Lokvenc 56
Pettersson 83
Reich 87
Jentzsch denied Klose a 100% sitter early on. The young attacker was
then brought down by Stranzl in the box, Adonis dispatched the spot
kick. To make things even worse Stranzl got himself send off for a
tactical foul, again on Klose after already being booked, his second
sending off of the still young season.
Bierofka smacked Borimirov's centre straight into Koch's arms.
Pettersson intercepted Mykland's hospital pass, Lokvenc pounced onto
the ball and fired it through the braces of Jentzsch. Pettersson then
has to score his 1st goal of the season as well on a 1-on-1 with the
'keeper but he failed miserably (as usual).
The blond Swede then at least accepted Jentzsch's gift as he returned
the 'keeper's weakly punched clearance. A short-haired Reich stole the
ball off Tapalovic and sent his marker crashing onto his arse for a
2nd time with a rude dummy before placing a spectacularly curled shot
into the far corner, great goal.
It was the highest home defeat for the Löwen since 28.09.1968 against
Borussia Mönchengladbach. [TL]
Red Card : Stranzl 49 (1860 München)
Attendance : 33,500
SCHALKE 4-0 FRANKFURT
Böhme 38, 53
Latal 51
Happe 62
Böhme collected the ball from Nemec and danced past Houbtchev before
brilliantly burying it in the bottom-left corner, fantastic goal.
Wimmer should have been sent off for a murder attempt on Böhme but
was allowed to stay on but deservedly received his marching orders
for a similar foul only one minute (!) later.
Latal finished a textbook counter attack courtesy of an opening Andy
Möller pass with a deflected shot into the far corner. Böhme received
the ball from Mpenza on the left side of the box, thought about it for
a second and as he was wide open he scored a World Class half volley
with his marvellous left outside instep.
Happe scored his 1st goal in 2½ years from Sand's through pass to
complete the rout. Möller had his first goal for Schalke wrongly
disallowed for offside. [TL]
Red Card : Wimmer 47 (Frankfurt)
Attendance : 44,100
COTTBUS 1-0 BAYERN MÜNCHEN
Sebõk 14
Jens Jeremies made his comeback, the 1st game of the season for Bayern's
dynamic midfield engine. 14 minutes played, counter attack Cottbus : Kahn
was able to parry Labak's shot but as his defense let him down he was
without chance when Sebõk put away Akrapovic's centre on the follow-up.
Olli then had to make another great save against Micevski's left-sided
shot. Jancker (with hair) headed Élber's cross just wide. Kahn made yet
another great diving save to deny Mátyus as I recorded at least six
high-% counter attacking chances for Energie in the first half alone.
Paulo Sergio made his comeback in the 2nd half after a long, nagging
muscle injury and even scored the equalizer but the goal was disallowed
because Santa Cruz pulled Hujdurovic's shirt in the process. Game over,
Cottbus beat Bayern.
It was the first time that Bayern has lost 3 consecutive games in a row
under Ottmar Hitzfeld. [TL]

STUTTGART 3-3 HAMBURG
Lisztes 21 Kovac 17
Dundee 28, 46 Barbarez 31, 59
The usual HSV game... Great offence from both sides -- and crap
defending. Holger Hieronymus afterwards said that our defending has
improved and that this time the goals were due to personal errors.
Err... yes... *g*
The goals : Heinz set Kovac up in the right part of the area, Kovac,
who had started this attack a few seconds before in our half, went
past the keeper and converted. Hertzsch (HSV! ;-)), standing on the
right, close to our own area, sent a cross (!) from the right to the
left to Seitz (VfB), who dribbled to the area and set up Lisztes who
scored from about 15m with a low shot.
Lisztes passed the ball to Dundee who stood with his back to the goal,
stopped it, danced with it and Hoogma (no great dribbling or so, it
was a slow dance, Hoogma had his arms around him like he was his girl
friend and stood between Dundee and the goal) into the area and shot
from a few meters through Butt's legs into the net (while Hoogma was
still between Dundee and the goal...).
Tøfting sent Heinz a long ball to the left into the penalty area, Heinz
passed low into the goal area and Barbarez tapped it in. After a high
ball Hosny set up Dundee with a header, who shot immediately past Butt
from about 16m. Kovac worked himself through on the left side, went to
the goalline, crossed low and found Barbarez.
Later in the game Balakov scored from a freekick, but the ref didn't
count it as he had stopped the action (he had already allowed the
freekick to be shot) and wanted to direct our wall (again)... *g*
A shame, this made our usual 4 :4 impossible! ;-)
Remarks : Balakov hit the bar from a freekick in the 13th minute.
Seitz made Pagel to replace Holler with Fischer after 20 minutes
as Holler was close to being sent off with a second booking.
Fischer then moved to the right side of our 4-man-defense and
Hertzsch took the left position.
Pagel was sent off in the second half -- a few minutes later his
assistant followed him... *g* [SM]

ROSTOCK 0-2 HERTHA
Deisler 3
Beinlich 72
The situation was clear. Rostock has won the last 3 games. They've
beaten Bayern in München in their last game. Hertha has lost all of
their away games. And same procedure as every season : The game in
Rostock is a key game for Hertha. And Hertha took the way to success !
In minute 3 it was Sebastian Deisler, who enlighted the 3,000 Hertha
fans in the building-site "Ostsee-Stadion". He started his turbo,
passed the midfield and spread the ball to the right to Veit, who
played to Reiss (Alex Alves was injured) at the corner of the box.
Reiss returned the ball to Deisler, who entered the box and from a
distance of 13 meters and placed the ball into the far corner. It was
his first goal since August 99 for Hertha. Rostock was shocked. Only
one chance for them in the first half. Arvidsson's header was turned
over the bar by Hertha 'keeper Gabor Király.
In the second half, Rostock tried to strike back but with lack of
success. In minute 54 Deisler was sent off with the yellow/red card.
But Hansa wasn't able to gain an advantage from this. A marvelous
Beinlich kick into the top-right corner from 16 meters in minute 72
set the point to win for Hertha.
6 minutes before the end of the game, Rostock's Yasser was sent off
for his second bookable offence with the yellow/red card. [BH]
Red Cards : Deisler 54 (Hertha), Yasser 84 (Rostock)
Attendance : 16,500 (sold out)
UNTERHACHING 0-3 WOLFSBURG
Kühbauer 39
Juskowiak 54
Akpoborie 63
Juskowiak struck the post, Tremmel denied Akpoborie and Kühbauer on
the follow-up. Akpoborie flicked onto Reitmaier's long punt upfield
but Juskowiak blasted wide. Hirsch flicked Sebescen's long throw-in
straight onto Kühbauer's foot who marked the 0-1 with his first
Bundesliga goal.
Reitmaier made an absolutely phenomenal save against Bergen's bullet
header early in the 2nd half. Sebescen stole the ball off Straube on
his own area and swapped passes with Akpoborie on the counter attack
before Juskowiak wide-openly put away Akpoborie's centre.
Kühbauer nodded Maltritz' long cross back into the middle of the box,
Akpoborie powered the 3-0 through the braces of the 'keeper. 'Haching
play too offensive football, they were better last season where their
success was based on disciplined defending and precise counterattacks.
Bayern, 1860 and 'Haching all lost this weekend without scoring a
single goal. [TL]
