FREIBURG 1-0 HERTHA
Ramdane 80
Freiburg should have been awarded a penalty when Sverrisson clipped
Tanko. Kobiashvili, one of the best left-sided midfielders in Europe
cleared a Rehmer shot off a goalmouth scramble on the line. Zandi
set up Ramdane on the edge of the box and the ex-Rostocker twisted
himself through 3 defenders and slotted into the far corner for the
game-winner. Deisler had a beautiful 90th minute, 25 meter free kick
goal rightfully disallowed for offside.
Attendance : 25,000 (sold out)
BREMEN 0-0 UNTERHACHING
Werder who fortunately were without liabilities Bode and Verlaat
due to injury created a glut of chances but were let down by poor
finishing, particularly from Aílton, although Claudio Pizarro who
was in absolutely stellar form during the month of April had a
rather modest game as well. 'Haching rarely threatened. Werder is
still without a victory against the Spielvereinigung in 4 games.
Attendance : 29,810
5 MAY 2001
ROSTOCK 1-0 COTTBUS
Rydlewicz 9
Hujdurovic fouled Arvidsson, Rydlewicz blasted in the resulting free
kick from 25 meters out, no reaction from the 'keeper. Helbig dived
for a penalty but justice was served when Piplica (!) blew the spot
kick. Pieckenhagen turned Helbig's shot against the post at the
beginning of the 2nd half. Piplica made a great save from Arvidsson's
close range header. Miriuta set up Helbig once more with a marvellous
through pass but the 'keeper was once again equal to his left-footed
drive.
Attendance : 22,000 (sold out)
FRANKFURT 3-0 BOCHUM
Branco 53
Yang 82
Preuß 84
Heinen made a great save 1-on-1 with Freier. Wimmer struck his own post
from Colding's centre under pressure from Baluszynski. Van Duijnhoven
"caused" a penalty against Kryszalowicz but made up for his mistake by
saving Heldt's lame shot. The pair of Heldt and Kryszalowicz linked up
again only minutes later, the Polish striker sprinted onto the through
pass by the playmaker, turned Schröder inside out and set up Branco for
the 1-0. Heinen made another great save from Fahrenhorst, Covic headed
a sitter of a rebound over the bar !
Branco was sent off for a tackle from behind on Freier. German U-20
International Christoph Preuß struck the post from just outside the
box. Bastürk joined Branco under the shower for throwing the ball
away after already been booked for dissent. Chen Yang made it 2-0
from Kryszalowicz' pass on the counter attack and Preuß wrapped
things up with a lob over the 'keeper after swapping passes with,
again, Kryszalowicz who made all 3 goals and won the penalty after
spending the first 45 minutes on the bench !
Red Cards : Branco 68 (Frankfurt), Bastürk 80 (Bochum)
Attendance : 20,600
1860 MÜNCHEN 3-1 KÖLN
Max 12 Timm 11
Agostino 82
Arveladze 83 (og)
Hoffmann did everything possible wrong: First he allowed Timm an open
look at goal by directing a through pass right into his path and then
he deflected the young forward's shot into his own net...should cause
nightmares for the Lions defender... Max knocked down Riedl's cross
and equalized with a turn-around volley only 1 minute later.
Mykland almost snapped the crossbar from a Häßler free kick trick.
Scherz missed an open goal with the 'keeper out after Springer's centre.
Pröll made a great save from Häßler's free kick. Agostino headed in his
first goal in 2001 from Häßler's corner and Arveladze added an own goal
after some penalty area ping-pong to decide the game.
Attendance : 26,900
LEVERKUSEN 0-1 BAYERN MÜNCHEN
Santa Cruz 87
Kahn made a great block against Kirsten in the 3rd minute to deny Bayer
an early goal. Andersson almost scored an own goal at the beginning of
the 2nd half wasn't it for Kahn's perfect positional play. Kuffour
headed against the crossbar after a 54th minute corner, Bayern's first
decent chance of the game. Santa Cruz barely missed with a whack across
goal after a great opening created by Lizarazu.
Zé Roberto missed a sitter at the other end after an awesome, defense-
splitting pass from Placente. Kahn made good saves against Ramelow's
ferocious first time strike and Ballack's close range follow-up.
Paraguayan teenager Roque Santa Cruz out of nowhere scored the game
winner with a looping header against 3 (!) defenders from Effenberg's
corner 3 minutes from time !
Attendance : 22,500 (sold out)
SCHALKE 2-1 WOLFSBURG
Sand 31 Juskowiak 90
Mpenza 33
1-time German International Zoltan Sebescen who leaves Wolfsburg
for Leverkusen at the end of the season shocked the 58,000 at the
Parkstadion when he hit the post from Kühbauer's ball over the top
of the S04 defense. Möller found Sand with a phenomenal pass over
50 meters, the Bundesliga topscorer clobbered Kryger and Greiner
before thoughtfully placing the ball past Reitmaier into the far
corner. Möller then won the ball in midfield (!), Böhme flew down
the wing, Mpenza killed his cross and in one motion volleyed in
the 2-0 although from a suspiciously offside-looking position.
Reitmaier made a great save from Oude Kamphuis early into the
2nd half. Mpenza and Greiner might as well have been sent off for
a 65th minute tussle but the ref left it at yellow cards for both
of them. Juskowiak grabbed the meaningless consolation with a tap
in from Sebescen's cross. Maric had an injury time header come
back off the post as Schalke has to thank Lady Luck for 3 points
from this game.
Attendance : 58,370
HAMBURG 1-1 KAISERSLAUTERN
Präger 21 Adzic 84
Barbarez was sent off for getting headbutted by Schjønberg (yes, you
read correctly !). Despite being a man down Hamburg kept attacking
and were rewarded when tiny Roy Präger headed in Fukal's cross for
his first goal in ages ! FCK youth team product Silvio Adzic scored
the equalizer with a deflected, looping shot off a short clearance.
Red Card : Barbarez 17 (Hamburg)
Attendance : 52,124
4 MAY 2001
DORTMUND 0-0 STUTTGART
Stuttgart defended with discipline and passion thus ending Borussia's
title dreams. Dortmund sorely lacked some creativity despite a very
offensive lineup with Evanílson, Ricken, Rosický, Reina and Bobic.
Attendance : 67,500
