BUNDESLIGA ROUND 2

PLENTY OF GOALS

Bundesliga fans saw plenty of nice goals this weekend, 35 to be precise
which already equals last seasons record. Six teams managed to score 4
goals and only one game ended in a draw which is fine as well.

18 AUGUST 2000

COTTBUS 1-4 DORTMUND
Miriuta 68 (pen) Evanílson 9
							Stevic 59
							Herrlich 64, 81

Fantastic atmosphere (La Ola right from the start) in the sold out Stadion
der Freundschaft for Energie's home debut in a classic game David vs
Goliath as 3 years ago Dortmund won the Champions League while
Cottbus was still playing in the 3rd Division. This game also saw Matthias
Sammer take on his former coach at Dynamo Dresden and East Germany,
Eduard Geyer.

Borussia got off to a better start as Evanílson received the ball from Oliseh,
killed it with a 360° dribble, muscled his way past 2 defenders and unleashed
an unstoppable shot into the top left corner from the edge of the area. Labak
shot high over the goal with Lehmann out at the other end.

Lehmann then made an excellent save from Miriuta's free kick. Addo runied a
sitter with a poor first touch. Ikpeba shot high over the goal 1 on 1 with the
'keeper. Addo destroyed Vata and Mátyus but Ikpeba once again wasted his
opening pass. Stevic then finally stopped the chance-wasting when he got
the ball from Evanílson and sent a left-footed distance shot past Piplica.

Beeck turned the ball over to Oliseh who fed his countryman Ikpeba who
finally did something right as he ran at the Energie "defense" and dished
the ball to Herrlich who beat the 'keeper who stood too far in front of his
goal with a well-placed shot. Dedê brought down substitute Helbig in the
box, Miriuta converted.

Cottbus now attacked with 4 strikers (Labak, Franklin, Helbig and Horváth)
but still couldn't break down the solid yellow and black defense around
Heinrich so logically Dortmund put the game out of reach on the counter
attack, Addo once again clobbered Mátyus, crossed and Herrlich was there
to score his 2nd of the night with a textbook header against the run of the
'keeper.

Dortmund enjoy their best start into the season since the 1994-95 season
(where they eventually won the Championship by the way...) while Cottbus
falls back to 0-0-2 and 1-7 goals.

Attendance : 19,500 (sold out)

19 AUGUST 2000

1860 MÜNCHEN 2-1 BREMEN
Häßler 44 Herzog 14
Agostino 81

Bode made his way into the area after a give-and-go with Frings, Hofmann
came out of his goal, Bode laid the ball back to Stalteri who saw his shot get
cleared off the line by Paßlack but Herzog was at hand to bang the rebound
back in.

Stalteri shot wide after being brought into a promising position by Herzog.
Bode had another one on one situation with the 'keeper wrongly called off
for offside. Rost made a tremendous save against Bierofka after the junior
international left Verlaat in his dust.

Max sold a regular aerial duel with Eilts as foul, Häßler stepped up and
blasted in the free kick from well over 30 meters - for the 2nd week in a row
Werder 'keeper Rost had to swallow an unstoppable direct free kick.

Hofmann denied Frings with a good save. A positional error by Frank Baumann
allowed Agostino to chest down and blast in Riedl's cross for the game winner.
The weather was too good for Werder to win anyway... ;) Boys in green still
without an away victory in 2000.

Attendance : 28,200

WOLFSBURG 4-0 KAISERSLAUTERN
Juskowiak 35, 69, 81
Rische 54

Ramzy was sent off after 25 minutes for two stupid fouls on his ex-teammates
Rische & Wagner. Munteanu sent through Juskowiak, the big Pole went past
'keeper Koch and slotted the ball into the empty net - Schjønberg crashed
hard into the post while attempting a last second save and had to be
stretchered off.

Koch made a great save against a saucy Wagner shot into the near corner.
Then Munteanu came up with his 2nd brilliant through pass of the afternoon,
this time to Rische who coolly lobbed the ball over the 'keeper. Georg Koch
then did well to deflect a Juskowiak strike against the post.

Wolfsburg had plenty of time in 'Lautern's box, Nowak cut back Rische's cross
to his countryman Juskowiak who spun around on the beer mat to make it
3-0 and Wolves' #9 didn't have enough, he controlled another Nowak cross
on his chest before volleying in the 4-0 final result.

It was Kaiserslautern's worst start into the Bundesliga in club history.
Therefore there were plenty off "Otto raus!" (Otto out) and "Wir sind
'Lauterer und ihr nicht!" (We're from 'Lautern, you are not) chants from the
FCK faithful after the game.

Red Card : Ramzy 25 (Kaiserslautern)
Attendance : 15,123

UNTERHACHING 1-1 FREIBURG
Rraklli 44 Kobiashvili 55 (pen)

Breitenreiter headed Rraklli's corner straight into Golz' arms. Rraklli fired
wide when put through by Grassow but then did better in his 2nd attempt
when put through by Schwarz just before the half time break.

Wittmann floored Kobiashvili in the box, the Georgian international did the
job from the spot himself. His countryman Iashvili left Seifert on his arse
but shot high over the bar a minute later. Golz made a great save to keep
out Hertl's low drive.

Straube blasted a 90th minute free kick against the crossbar and so this
game deservedly ended in a 1-1 draw.

Attendance : 10,200

HERTHA 4-0 HAMBURG
Beinlich 18, 32
Hartmann 34
Rehmer 75

Beinlich wonderfully bounced Deisler's cross off his chest and in one motion
fired the ball past Butt. Panadic was sent off for elbowing Wosz and Reiss
within two minutes. "Paule" then won a free kick near the edge of the box
which he perfectly converted himself.

Hertha's new playmaker (who wears #22 though) then played the ball into
the run of the reaccelerating Hartmann, "Hardy" clobbered last man Hoogma
who decided to let him go instead of risking another red card and the nimble
winger put the ball through Butt's braces.

Butt made an incredible save to keep out another trademark Beinlich free
kick. Rehmer headed in Beinlich's cross, Butt might have went after that
cross himself instead of trusting on his "defense". Michalke missed a sitter
all alone in front of goal.

Conclusion : Berlin owns Hamburg's ass. The blue-white Hertha was inspired
by a WORLD CLASS Beinlich who scored 2 goals himself and assisted another
3. For Hamburg it maybe was a defeat at the right time so some of their
supporters can remain reasonable.

Red Card : Panadic 30 (Hamburg)
Attendance : 48,555

BOCHUM 0-3 BAYERN MÜNCHEN
						Jancker 16, 23
						Santa Cruz 19

Zickler was put through by Sforza at 5' but Van Duijnhoven well saved his
half-arsed attempt, to make things worse "Zicko" also strained his thigh
during the action. The Dutch 'keeper made another good save vs. a close
range Jancker drive minutes later. Linke did well to intercept Buckley's cross
with Weber all alone in front of the Bayern goal.

Zickler was replaced by Santa Cruz @ 10'. Tarnat forced Van Duijnhoven into
a double-fisted save with his trademark rocket free kick from 30 meters.
Jancker collected the ball from Sforza, dodged Bemben and Stickroth and
fired the ball into the left-bottom corner from just outside the area.

Bayern's bald striker then put through Santa Cruz with a classy backheel, the
"Holy Cross" pulled the ball back to send Mamic crashing onto his arse before
coolly scooping the ball into the far corner - wonderful goal ! Bayern raided
Bochum's half with another counter attack, Fink to Jancker and Bayern's
"attack tank" sensitively finished with a lob over the 'keeper.

Kahn came out of his goal to deny Buckley in a 1 on 1 and then did well to
keep out a Peschel free kick, Meichelbeck blazing the rebound wide. Jancker
won a penalty for a mild bump from Bemben but Van Duijnhoven had no
problems with Brazzo's weak spot kick. Kahn made another mad charge off
his line to deny Bastürk.

At the other end Santa Cruz poked Sforza's free kick over the bar. The agile
Buckley created a 100% chance for Weber who slammed the ball agonizingly
wide though. Van Duijnhoven made a great two-footed save against Scholl.
21-year-old Italian striker Antonio Di Salvo who came on for the bushed
Jancker burned Toplak on the wing but selfishly shot from an acute angle,
'keeper saved, with Santa Cruz and Brazzo better positioned.

23 strong minutes were enough for Bayern B to beat a young Bochum.

Attendance : 32,645 (sold out)

STUTTGART 4-1 LEVERKUSEN
Gerber 31, 71 Ballack 61
Kovac 38 (og)
Lisztes 62

Kirsten was booked for diving. Lone striker Dundee stung Zuberbühler's palms
on the counter attack. Balakov played in Gerber who sold a rude dummy to
Zivkovic before firing home the 1-0 into Zuberbühler's near corner. The Swiss
'keeper then made a good save from a similar Gerber drive to partly
rehabilitate himself.

World Class watercarrier Pablo Thiam ran half the length of the pitch, was
impossible to brush off the ball and as his cross sailed in Robert Kovac was
there to tap the ball into his own net. Nowotny had to stay in the locker room
at half time because of a calf induration, 20-year-old Croatian talent Jurica
Vranjes came on in his place.

Balakov collected a perfect through pass from his potential successor Lisztes
but shot wide. Schneider was sent clear on the left wing, cut the ball back to
Ballack who finished with a good, straight shot into the top-right corner.
Kick-off : Lisztes won the ball in midfield, exchanged passes with Balakov and
Dundee before accurately chipping the ball 'past the 'keeper.

Gerber stole the ball off Reeb, marched into the area and fired in the 4-1 with
his strong left foot as Bundestrainer Skibbe was sitting in the stands - neither
the (that evening) awful Zivkovic, nor Schneider, nor Reeb had a clue how to
deal with the strong 28-year-old Saxon winger in this game.

It was Bayer's highest defeat since the 1-4 in Munich against Bayern in early
February while Stuttgart's 500th Bundesliga victory was a good dress rehearsal
for their Intertoto Final return leg with Auxerre.

Attendance : 25,000

20 AUGUST 2000

KÖLN 4-1 FRANKFURT
Voigt 25 Kutschera 82
Scherz 39
Springer 58
Kreuz 90

Frankfurt the dominating team early on, Ciric headed Guié-Mien's cross wide.
Guié-Mien then headed Heldt's cross onto goal but Springer deflected the ball
over the bar in the very last second. Voigt won the ball in midfield, swapped
passes with Cichon and as the Eintracht defense stood still appealing for
offside the bull-like defender cruised into the area to mark the 1-0.

Scherz (his name means 'joke' in English...) won the ball deep in Köln's own
half, carried it half the length of the pitch, passed to Timm who left Kracht
crashing onto his arse before returning the favour to Scherz for the easy
tap-in. Lottner had a goal rightfully disallowed for offside. Cichon who played
Libero for Lottner who instead moved up to midfield volleyed Arveladze's
cross over the bar.

Sichone played a perfect through pass to the quick Timm and the U-21
international showed vision as he centred for Springer who shot high into the
net. Arveladze had a regular goal (from yet another Timm centre) wrongly
disallowed for offside. Kutschera headed in Heldt's free kick before substitute
Kreuz ran the ball into goal after Heinen couldn't hold onto Donkov's close
range drive.

For Köln the season could basically end right now as they are above their
arch-rivals Leverkusen in the table. Frankfurt will have to get back up and try
again, they have Hansa Rostock at home next.

Attendance : 35,000

ROSTOCK 0-4 SCHALKE
							Mpenza 25, 30, 51
							Sand 40

All 4 Swedes were in Hansa's starting lineup for the first time but none of
them had anything which could even remotely be called a 'good game'.
Möller had the first real chance of the game when he volleyed inches past
the goal. Mpenza received the ball from Sand, Oswald failed to clear, Emile
got himself in front of Hansa's Emara and made it 0-1 with an outside instep
half volley, strange "limping" celebration to follow.

A hospital pass from Brand was picked up by Möller (made a surprisingly good
game) who released Mpenza, "Loko" laid the ball past Pieckenhagen, ran
back onto it and made it 0-2 from an acute angle. Then it was again Möller
who this time exchanged passes with Sand and even though onto the ground
managed to get a goal-bound shot off which Sand tapped into the empty net
=> 1½ of the scorer points go to Möller on this one.

2nd half, Reck made a good save 1 on 1 with Agali. Lantz missed 2 high %
chances within 2 minutes. Sand controlled a long punt from Reck, played in
his strike partner and Mpenza this time rounded Pieckenhagen with a delicate
dummy to make it 0-4. Möller had a great coast-to-coast ride in the dying
minutes but lacked the concentration to finish. Hajto had a headed goal
disallowed for 'pushing' by Sand.

Agali blew another chance against Reck before Nemec fouled Ahanfouf in the
box but Hansa was so desolate that Wibrån even blew the penalty, respectively
Reck saved. 19-year-old Christian Mikolajczak made his Bundesliga debut for
Schalke, already the 2nd member of the German U-18 national team which won
the bronze medal at the U-18 EURO this year who 'got a game'.

Ahanfouf got himself sent off for two consecutive deliberate handballs.

Mpenza practised himself in understatement after the game when he said
"Basically I'm not a real goalgetter. If I manage to score 10 goals this season
I'm happy!"

Red Card : Ahanfouf 85 (Rostock)
Attendance : 15,000 (sold out)
