1 January 2012

SUNDERLAND 1 (Ji Dong-Won 93)
MANCHESTER CITY 0

Man City missed the chance to pull away at the top of the table as they were beaten by Sunderland thanks to a last gasp winner. Sunderland began confidently with Niklas Bendtner bursting clear early but couldn't get the ball past Joe Hart whilst the City keeper also saved well from James McClean. City had plenty of possession but only as the half drew on did they create anything as Edin Dzeko had a shot blocked by keeper Simon Mignolet before smashing a shot against the top of the bar. Enter City subs Sergio Aguero at half time and David Silva ten minutes after the break as the visitors still struggled to make an impact although Dzeko did fire over from the edge of the area and Aguero had a shot pushed wide. Ironically, Sunderland then wasted a golden chance as Stephane Sessegnon found space in the area but only thumped his shot wide when he should have at least made the keeper work. With two minutes to go, Silva forced a save out of Mignolet and Micah Richards could only nod the rebound into the ground and against the bar before it was scrambled away. It proved absolutely vital as, with three minutes of stoppage time just about up, Sunderland broke clear and Ji Dong-Won played a one-two with Sessegnon, waltzed past Hart and kept his feet before rolling the ball into an empty net for a astonishing finale, more so when replays showed him to be slightly offside!

WEST BROM 0
EVERTON 1 (Anichebe 87)

Everton move above West Brom in the table after a poor game at the Hawthorns. After an first half which, at best, was uneventful, the hosts should have led early in the second half as Peter Odemwingie got clear in the area but blazed over with only the keeper to beat. It was as close as anyone would come until late on when a cross from Tony Hibbert saw two home defenders go for the cross, resulting in the ball falling to sub Victor Anichebe six yards out and after getting the ball out of his feet, he fired in through a crowd of players.

Attendance : 23,038
Assist : Hibbert
