'Bobby' Carlos Gained an ill deserved reputation
as a dead ball specialist after scoring an extraordinary, physics defying free kick in a friendly tournament against France in 1997. He's been blasting free kicks into walls and the stands ever since. It didn't take Italian coaches long to exploit Roberto Carlos' mindless runs into attack (and lack of height) and he was sold to Real Madrid following a disastrous first season with Inter. In the tactically loose and slower paced Spanish game his attacking qualities more than compensated for any defensive shortcomings. Roberto Carlos formed a devastating partnership alongside Cafu in the Brazilian defence, winning two Copa America's and the World Cup. The duo were the best attacking full backs in World football and equally both of them became liabilities at club and international level in the latter stages of their careers.
