Can someone explain to me why the hell Wenger played Henry, again, having sealed qualification after round 4? YOU IDIOT.

2 November 2005

ARSENAL 3-0 SPARTA PRAGUE

A stunning opening goal for the Gunners. With his back to goal Reyes played a pass before nonchalantly turning away, Henry hit the ball with a thumping first time shot into the bottom corner. Reyes seemed to take an age to score after Bergkamp launched a counter attack and fired in a second when Pergel's attempts to clear a cross went horribly wrong.

THUN 2-4 AJAX

Sneijder blasted Ajax into the lead after Jakupovic failed to hold Anastasiou's bullet header. Adriano slipped a ball between two Ajax defenders and Lustrinelli shot into the corner. Anastasiou put Ajax back in front following good work by Babel. Adriano scored a second equaliser after a series of deflections in the box. Lustrinelli missed a great chance to put Thun into the lead when he headed wide from 5 yards. Pienaar touched back Anastasiou's pass to De Jong and he rifled the ball into the roof of the net. Anastasiou got a huge slice of luck when his attempted return pass smashed off Adriano and bounced towards Pienaar who instantly brought the ball under control before playing a blind back heel for Boukhari to tap in a slightly flattering fourth.

18 October 2005

AJAX 2-0 THUN

Anastasiou held off Milecevic to turn in Pienaar's cross. Ajax made a poor start to the second half and had several close shaves before Orman inadvertently played in Anastasiou while attempting to cut out a pass and he shot time past Jakupovic.

SPARTA PRAGUE 0-2 ARSENAL

Arsenal suffered another blow when Reyes left the field with a rib injury. Henry came on in his place and within five minutes gave the Gunners the lead with an outstanding goal. Toure hit a long ball out of defence, Henry brought it under control with a back heel then as he turned hit a toe poke with his right foot sending the ball curling inside the post. Henry ran between two defenders to score a second with the help of a deflection.

Attendance : 12,528
Assists : Toure, Pires

27 September 2005

AJAX 1-2 ARSENAL

Right Said Fred gave Wenger's depleted Gunners a perfect start. Flamini caught an Ajax midfielder sleeping in possession and passed to Reyes who tore a hole in the Ajax defence with a precision pass and Ljungberg waited for Vonk to go to ground before flicking into the corner, lovely goal. Pienaar, who is available on a free transfer at the end of the season, missed an absolute sitter. I'm sure the top European clubs are falling over themselves to sign him. Vonk's stupidity gave Reyes a chance to win a penalty which he gleefully took. Vonk really should know better at his age (54). Rosenborg scored a fortuitous equaliser when Galasek's drive bounced off the inside of a post and landed at his feet.

Attendance : 51,000
Assists : Reyes, Reyes (won pen), n/a

14 September 2005

SPARTA PRAGUE 1-1 AJAX

Matusovic had an immediate impact after coming on as a second half substitute. He curled a shot against the inside of a post from 20 yards before scoring what is almost certainly a contender for goal of the tournament. He latched onto a slack clearance and caught the ball on the volley sending it arrowing into the top corner. Sneljder's long range effort in in injury time wasn't quite as good but earned the Dutch a point.

Attendance : 20,000
Assists : n/a, Babel

ARSENAL 2-1 THUN

Bergkamp 92Hours after Wenger had stupidly claimed Arsenal could win the Champions League because "If Liverpool can win it, then so can we" his team went out and embarrassed themselves. Van Persie was harshly sent off for catching Orman in the face with his boot as the defender tried to clear a cross.

Gilberto headed Arsenal into the lead from a corner. Ferreira scored a superb equaliser though he probably didn't mean it. He latched onto Lauren's slack clearance and hooked the ball towards the back post and it looped over Almunia. Bergkamp, on as a second half substitute, latched onto Campbell's long ball and as he tried to turn, collided with a defender but quickly recovered to shoot past Jakupovic.

After all the sissy football Arsenal's two goals were scored from high balls into the box. Wenger is probably furious.

Attendance : 31,500
Red Card : van Persie 45 (Arsenal)
Assists : Reyes (ck), n/a, n/a
