Qualify for knockout stages
UEFA Cup
10 December 2003
BAYERN 1-0 ANDERLECHT
Makaay 42 (pen)
Zewlakow pushed Pizarro in the back and the striker with the gayest haircut of all
time, really he looks ******* ridiculous, went down, penalty. Makaay converted
to send a very poor Bayern side into the knockout stages.
Assist : Pizarro (won pen)
LYON 3-2 CELTIC
Elber 6 Hartson 24
Juninho 52, 86 (Pen) Sutton 75
Elber headed in a rebound after Juninho's free kick came back off a post.
A horrendous piece of defending allowed Celtic back in the match. Cacapa
let Sutton's header roll through his legs, Larsson's shot was saved but Hartson
steered in the rebound. Hedman made another of his infamous clangers when he
was beaten by Juninho's speculative 40 yd shot. Sylla chased down Berthod,
he panicked and attempted to pass the ball - across the face of goal, the ball
bounced off Sylla and landed at Sutton's feet, 2-2. An extremely dubious penalty
sent Lyon into phase two at Celtic's expense. Luyundula's header may or may not
have struck Balde's arm but according to the rules handball has to be intentional
and this certainly wasn't. The Lyon players pointed for a corner, the ref pointed
to the spot, Juninho converted. Sucks to be Celtic.
Assists : Diarra, Sylla

ANDERLECHT 1-0 LYON
Tihinen 69
Tihinen headed in a deflected cross.
CELTIC 0-0 BAYERN
A dull, physical game with Hedman providing the only highlight with a spectacular one
handed save from the oh so disappointing Ballack.
Bayern have the easiest task on paper, a home tie against Anderlecht. Lyon and Celtic are
both great at home and terrible away from home so Lyon have the edge.

BAYERN MUNICH 1-2 LYON
Makaay 14 Juninho 6
Elber 53
An amazing free kick by Juninho, miles away from goal, dipped wickedly before crashing in off the
post. Bayern were level soon after through Makaay and Coupet, who looked very shaky, rode his
luck in goal with some timely deflections and the post coming to his rescue. Edmilson launched a
ball into the box, Demichelis should have cleared but Luyindula robbed him of possession and touched
the ball back to Malouda, his shot was charged down by Kuffour but he got a second chance and
passed to Elber, he ran wide of Kahn before shooting into the corner. I just knew when the draw
was made this would happen. You'd assume Lyon thwarted sustained Bayern pressure to hold onto
the points but that's not what happened. Lyon in fact finished stronger with Juninho and Malouda
wasting chances on counter attacks.
Assists : Luyindula (won fk), Ze Roberto, Malouda
CELTIC 3-1 ANDERLECHT
Larsson 12 Dindane 77
Miller 17
Sutton 29
3 goals inside the first 30 minutes maintained Celtic's impressive European home record. Larsson
nodded in Agathe's cross. Hartson helped on a long ball and Miller smashed into the bottom corner.
Sutton's spectacular diving header, again after Hartson had helped on a cross (from a corner) gave
Celtic an unassailable lead. A fantastic dive by Dindane gave Anderlecht a penalty. He ran past
Balde then kicked himself before falling in the box. Hedman guessed right and saved from Mornar
but should have held what was a weakly struck shot, he blocked Wilhelmsson on the rebound only
for Dindane to wallop the ball into the roof of he net.
Assists : Agathe, Hartson (x2)

ANDERLECHT 1-0 CELTIC
Dindane 72
Despite having a 10 man advantage for the majority of the match following Do Boeck's 26th minute
dismissal, Celtic's pathetic away record continued when they fell victim to a goal from the highly
rated Aruna Dindane who did what Varga failed to do earlier in the half - score from close range.
Varga's miss has to be seen to be believed.
Assist : Wilhelmsson
LYON 1-1 BAYERN MUNICH
Luyindula 88 Makaay 26
Deisler and Santa Cruz started for Bayern. The chances of them two being fit at the same time must
be a million to one. Bayern took the lead slightly against the run of play when Makaay converted a
Ballack pass. Santa Cruz wasted two great chances to make the points safe before Lyon were finally
rewarded for their incessant pressure with Luyindula's headed equaliser. A stunning point blank save
denied Elber a chance to score the winning goal against his former club.
Bayern have played like Inter so far and that's a recipe for disaster.
Assists : Ballack, Malouda

ANDERLECHT 1-1 BAYERN MUNICH
Mornar 52 Santa Cruz 73
A niece piece of trickery by Aruna on the touchline took him away from Kovac, Kahn came off
his line to close him down leaving a big gap for Croat Mornar. Santa Cruz' rescued Bayern with
a powerful header. I have no idea why Pizarro was sent off.
Assists : Aruna, Salihamidzic
Red Card : Pizarro 35 (Bayern)
CELTIC 2-0 LYON
Miller 70
Sutton 78
Coupet pulled off a brilliant save from a Thompson penalty. Miller and Sutton headed in
Larsson crosses.
Assists : Larsson (x2)
17 September 2003
BAYERN 2-1 CELTIC
Makaay 73, 86 Thompson 58
Shortly after Ze Roberto had wasted a clear opening Thompson met a deep cross by Agathe
to head Celtic in front. A horrible miss by Balde proved crucial. Celtic had defended well
against Bayern crosses all night until Varga headed Salgado's cross straight to Makaay
and his fierce volley pierced the bottom corner of the net. For the second time in the match
Ze Roberto missed an absolute sitter. Hedman threw away the points when he completely
misjudged Makaay's cross.
Assists : Agathe, Sagnol
LYON 1-0 ANDERLECHT
Juninho 26 (pen)
Govou and Anderlecht 'keeper Zitka collided when challenging for a ball. Clearly not a
penalty so the ref pointed to the spot. Juninho slotted into the bottom corner. Zitka got
away with murder in the second half when he floored Malouda as he bore down on goal.
A tremendous save by Coupet denied Zetterberg an equaliser.
Assist : Govou (won pen)
